"National Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 11-17) will have special significance for the schools of Rhode Island. The National Geographic Society has just awarded a $1000 planning grant to the two of us, one of such seven awards granted this year, to begin the process by which all of our schools may again bring geography to its full importance in the curriculum."

Making Games And Equipment For Young Children, Claudia Eliason
Making Games And Equipment For Young Children, Claudia Eliason
All Archived Publications
Many opportunities for enjoyment, learning, and interaction can be provided through the child's use of homemade games and equipment. Children love games and parents usually like to provide as many as they can. However, not only does the family budget often limit the quantity and quality of pieces of equipment that can be purchased, but in addition many store toys are limited in terms of their learning potential for children and parents. It is the intent of this booklet to suggest games that can be made from easily accessible and inexpensive materials.

Consolidating Perceptions Of Middle School Teaching Through Participatory-Type Early Field Experiences, Bobby D. Moore, Rex Leonard
Consolidating Perceptions Of Middle School Teaching Through Participatory-Type Early Field Experiences, Bobby D. Moore, Rex Leonard
Faculty Publications
It is entirely possible that prospective teachers whose early school exposures are limited to the short student teaching endeavor will have an inaccurate or distorted perception of the problems and frustrations they will actually encounter when they being their initial teaching assignment. This study was designed to determine the impact that extensive early field experiences had on the ranking of the middle school teacher characteristics at specific stages of maturation during the teacher preparation program. Of the 10 teacher characteristics ranked, half showed significant changes in priorities across the three assessments of the opinionnaire. Evidence from this study seems to …

Vocabulary knowledge is one of the most critical elements of comprehension. Helping students to expand their own vocabularies and to become more interested in words is a challenge for all teachers. The following techniques provide teachers various ways to enhance students' vocabulary development. To read more about vocabulary instruction, see: Heimlich, J.E., & Pittelman, S.D. (1986). All readers need successful learning experiences. Recent research suggests that poor readers benefit from using the same whole language reading and writing strategies as more successful readers. In her introduction to the April 1988 themed issue of Vie Reading Teacher on what works with poor readers.
Irene West Gaskins stated: The research I was doing supported the current view that reading is a process in which an active and strategic reader gains meaning through an interaction between background knowledge and information in a text. Since I have adopted this definition, the way I teach has changed and students in the …

The Use Of Audio Interaction In A Telecourse Offered By Satellite: Foundation Of Adult Basic Education, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
The information explosion in our technologically oriented society has brought with it a shortened time span of cultural and factual knowledge change in each succeeding decade. Thus, professionals being educated in graduate Adult Education/Human Resources Development programs as teachers and for other roles need a lifelong learning perspective to prevent their becoming obsolete. These graduate programs have increased in North America from approximately thirty in 1960 to more than three hundred in 1990. However, a question remains for those who seek to serve these needs. How will the long-term impact of these graduate programs be measured, determined and evaluated? One …

Teaching Accounting Concepts Versus Applications: An Analysis Of Student Attitudes, Marshall A. Geiger
Teaching Accounting Concepts Versus Applications: An Analysis Of Student Attitudes, Marshall A. Geiger
Accounting Faculty Publications
Accounting faculty have long debated the usefulness and appropriateness of their teaching endeavor. One of the central themes in this continuing discussion is that of teaching concepts versus teaching applications of current accounting principles. In order to empirically address this issue, students' attitudes toward the conceptual aspects and toward the practical application aspects of financial accounting were assessed. This research also reports on the development and validation of an instrument that measures attitudes of students toward these aspects of financial accounting. The instrument demonstrated high reliability with both intermediate and introductory students. Intermediate students were found to distinguish between attitudes …

G90-1006 Setting Up A Family Council, Herbert G. Lingren
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
A family sitting down together and talking about important thoughts, situations, and issues is certainly not a new idea--it has been practiced for centuries. It is an idea, however, that needs to be put to work in the present day.
1. Do you treat your child better, worse or about the same as you treat your best friend?
2. Does your child have equal status as a person with the adults in your family?
3. Do you assign chores and times to do them, or does your child help in the planning?
4. Do you try to make decisions about …
G90-985 Discipline -- An Effective Life Guide, Herbert G. Lingren
G90-985 Discipline -- An Effective Life Guide, Herbert G. Lingren
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
There is no doubt that discipline is needed in families. Society could not exist if people acted without concern for others. Why, then, is there so much disagreement about this subject?
Parents often misunderstand and confuse the terms discipline and punishment. They see them as being the same thing but they are not. The dictionary defines discipline as "a system of rules governing conduct." It is "training that corrects, molds, or perfects." In contrast, punishment is defined as "retributive suffering, pain, loss, or penalty." The term discipline has its origin in the word "disciple" -- a follower who learns from …
G90-962 Introducing Solid Foods To Babies, Darlene Martin
G90-962 Introducing Solid Foods To Babies, Darlene Martin
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide explains when and how to add solid foods to your baby's diet.
Good nutrition is the cornerstone of a baby's growth and development. The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends breast-feeding for most full-term infants. No formula can replace the immunological protection a baby receives from colostrum -- the breast milk produced the first few days after birth. It's important to breast-feed for at least the first few weeks, even if it can't be continued for a long time. If breast-feeding is not your choice, or if it is discontinued before the baby's first birthday, commercially prepared infant …

Ec90-434 Let's Preserve: Canning Basis, Julie A. Albrecht
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Canning can be a safe and economical way to preserve quality food at home. Home preserved foods can provide a variety of nutritious food for your family all year long.
How Canning Preserves Foods
The high water content of most fresh foods makes them very perishable. Foods spoil or lose their quality for several reasons:
growth of undesirable microorganisms - bacteria, molds, and yeasts
activity of food enzymes
reactions with oxygen
moisture loss
