The Kalamazoo Public Schools serve approximately 14,000 students in 25 schools. Located in Kalamzoo County, the Kalamazoo Public Schools District is one of the largest employers in the county as they have 1,400 employees. The Kalamazoo Public School District is operated by seven member Board of Education and supported by the people that reside within the school district boundaries.

The internship involved 240 hours working with personnel in Central Administration in the areas of public relations, personnel procedures and practices, organizational structure, curriculum development and regulations in special education, financial planning, contract negotiations and federal and state programs.

The primary objective of this study was to observe a state mediator in his role during public sector contract negotiations and relate these observations to the tenets of conflict management and power sources.

Conclusions are drawn relative to the impact of the mediation process on collective bargaining.

The objective of my internship was to become familiar with the role and duties of a K-12 school principal. I was exposed to a wide variety of experiences. Those experiences, through readings, personal interviews, and group meetings are the focus of my internship. My experiences included working with the Challenge Program, which is for the gifted and talented students, and helping to re-word some of the present job descriptions. I also assisted with the realignment of boundary lines and research on teacher evaluations. Absence policies and junior high level programs were also investigated.

The school district is located just north of a city with a population of 50,000 on the shores of Lake Michigan. It was necessary to research any changes in the law, state rules, and administrative guidelines in advance of completely revising the policy manual. . The purpose of this field study was to develop a model self-assessment process for local boards of education. Since 1977, this researcher has served as Assistant Regional Superintendent of Schools in Champaign and Ford Counties. From that experience the researcher determined that many local boards do not define and implement a formal self-evaluation process. Of the twenty-one school districts in Champaign and Ford Counties only three have planned and conducted a self-assessment program during the past four years. Since 1983, 57 per cent of the total school board membership of these districts has changed.

Public opinion regarding the schools in Decatur Public School District #61 is addressed in this field experience. The study focuses on a comparison of local public opinion to national public opinion.

The questionnaire for the telephone survey was developed by selecting 11 questions from the 1982 Gallup education poll and adding a question regarding merit pay for teachers.

The local telephone survey included a random sampling from the Decatur, Illinois telephone directory of 200 residents living within Decatur Public School District #61. Each respondent was placed into three subgroups--parent or non-parent, age level, and highest level of formal education received. …

The purpose of this study was to examine policies and procedures on the use of corporal punishment in public schools. Specifically, this study reviewed current literature, statute law, court decisions, agency regulations, and research to develop sound recommended policies and procedures on possible use of corporal punishment in schools.
