The purpose of this study was to determine whether teaching critical thinking skills with the microcomputer produces a greater increase in the thinking skills of middle school students than teaching critical thinking skills with conventional methods.;The sample consisted of ten intact classes (N = 204) of seventh grade students who had registered for a class called, "Problem Solving with the Microcomputer." Five of the classes were assigned at random to two treatment groups and five classes served as the control group. The purpose of this research was an analysis of the implementation of the federally mandated undergraduate desegregation criteria. This research looked at the development of policy at the federal level, and the subsequent response by the State of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University.;Virginia Commonwealth University was selected for this study for two reasons: (1) Virginia Commonwealth University is located in an urban setting which has the largest black population in the state, and (2) this institution has the largest target (identified by the state) of black enrollment than any other public senior institution in Virginia.;Retention strategies were used to measure …

The purpose of this study was to examine the specific relationship which exists between selected sociodemographic characteristics and the religiosity of a group of incoming community college students and their sexual attitudes and sexual behaviors.;A sample of 204 community college students completed a survey aimed at assessing their sexual attitudes, sexual behaviors, and religiosity. The instrument was based on a number of previously printed surveys and its reliability was tested with a sample of 23 community college students.;The reliability study demonstrated conclusive evidence that this instrument is highly reliable. This study investigated the claim that some of the academically best evangelical colleges are in the process of secularizing. An instrument was developed which differentiated between evangelical and more liberal positions on religious, social, and political issues. Faculty attitudes were measured as representative of a particular college's position.;In Phase I, the DISCRIMINANT Program of the SPSS produced a predictor equation based on those questionnaire items which best discriminated between a stratified, random sample of faculty at known evangelical colleges and a similar sample at known secularized, church-related institutions. The purpose of this study was to examine fact-finding as a method of conflict resolution in Virginia Public School grievance cases to determine the extent that school boards and courts accept the fact-finders' recommendation. The Effects Of Word Processing On The Writing Of Selected Fifth- Grade Students, Walter C. Woolley

The purpose of this study was to determine whether 120 fifth-grade students composed significantly better writing using word processors than using pencil and paper. The subjects included 65 males and 55 females. Following an introductory lesson in keyboarding and instruction on the Bank Street Writer word processing program, randomly selected control and treatment groups participated in sixteen 45-minute sessions of prewriting, writing, and revising expository paragraphs and essays. Both groups used a process approach to writing. Trained scorers evaluated the compositions. Results were tabulated using MANOVA to test for significant differences between groups. The purpose of this study was to analyze the existing literature to determine how the line-staff structure may influence academic managers and their institutions. The study focused on identifying behavior-linked line-staff distinguishing variables on which academic line and staff managers may differ. Emphasis was placed on using information in the literature to generate new research propositions.;Forty-four documents which compared line and staff managers on one or more position, personal, and psychological variables were reviewed using a structured content analysis procedure. Superintendents of residential schools for the deaf were the subjects of a study to determine what effects career orientation had on the implementation of role changes since the passage of Public Law 94-142 in 1975. The relationship between the job preview and the job related behaviors of absenteeism, turnover, and job satisfaction was investigated. The objective of the study was to attempt to determine if a job preview booklet that contained information about teaching would have a statistically significant effect on the three job-related behaviors of absenteeism, turnover, and job satisfaction. Data were gathered by examining absenteeism and turnover information from 103 newly hired teachers in the seven school divisions participating in the study. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between eliciting the relaxation response in first year law students and academic performance.;First year law students at Southern Illinois University ware chosen for this study. Law students were chosen because their course of study was rigorous and stress producing and every student had the same courses during the first year.;There were two treatment groups and a non-treatment control group.
