Levels Of Development In The Language Of Deaf Children: Asl Grammatical Processes, Signed English Structures, Semantic Features, Sue Livingston

Publications and Research

This study describes the spontaneous sign language of six deaf children (6 to 16 years old) of hearing parents, who were exposed to Signed English when after the age of six they first attended a school for the deaf. Samples of their language taken at three times over a 15-month period were searched for processes and structures representative or not representative of Signed English. The nature of their developing semantics was described as the systematic acquisition of features of meaning in signs from selected lexical categories (kinship terms, negation, time expression, wh-questions, descriptive terms, and prepositions/conjunctions).

Processes not representative of …

The Relationship That Teachers' Concerns And Their Perceptions Of Organizational Climate Have With Innovation Maintenance, Frederic Wayne De Vall Aug 1983

The Relationship That Teachers' Concerns And Their Perceptions Of Organizational Climate Have With Innovation Maintenance, Frederic Wayne De Vall

Dissertations

The main purpose of this study was to determine what some of the factors are that have an affect upon the maintenance of an innovation. Many educational change models focus upon the initiation and implementation of educational innovations in schools. This study tested some of the factors identified, from the literature review as affecting innovation maintenance, upon one innovation which is being used by teachers in several school districts. The first factor centered upon the concerns teachers have about an innovation they use in their classrooms. The second factor centered upon teachers' perceptions of the organizational climate that exists which …

A Syllabus For First Grade Teachers: Introducing Reading As A Functional Skill Through Food-Related Activities And Food Preparation, Tonia Carlene Mckenzie

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of the project was two-fold. First, it was developed to teach first grade children the importance of learning to read as a functional necessity. The second purpose was to develop methods of doing this while simultaneously reinforcing several beginning reading and comprehension skills in a motivational way. Both purposes are addressed in a syllabus for first grade teachers that outlines how to use food-related experiences to supplement a beginning reading program.

The Use Of Feuerstein’S Instrumental Enrichment With Underprepared College Students: A Pilot Study, Michael Kieta Jul 1983

The Use Of Feuerstein’S Instrumental Enrichment With Underprepared College Students: A Pilot Study, Michael Kieta

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This pilot study investigated the usage of Feuerstein’s (1980) Instrumental Enrichment with underprepared college students. Open admissions policies in colleges and universities have resulted in the enrollment of many students who are underprepared to meet the academic task demands. Courses have been developed by the colleges and universities to remediate the academic deficits of underprepared students. Remedial courses using traditional educational methods have been largely ineffective. Cognitive process instruction (CPI) is an area of educational research that recently began to receive increased attention in the field of remedial education. The goal of CPI has been to develop the cognitive/thought processes …

Mathematics: The Loss Of Certainty, Calvin Jongsma May 1983

Mathematics: The Loss Of Certainty, Calvin Jongsma

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1983

Morris Kline was a contentious mathematician and author, documenting (as he saw it) both the deficiencies of mid-twentieth-century reformist trends in mathematics education and formalist views of the foundations (and practice) of mathematics. This brief introduction to a discussion of Kline's 1980 book and its mixed reception by the mathematics community provides a context for assessing his ideas as part of his overall views on the nature of mathematics.

The Activitiy And Application Of Mathematics, R. S. D. Thomas

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1983

There are four so-called philosophies of mathematics that I regard as totally discredited, formalism, intuitionism, logicism, and Platonism. It is a common feature of the ism philosophies of mathematics that they do not take the application of mathematics very seriously. This paper examines a view of mathematics that takes applications seriously.

Using Mathematical Concepts To Illustrate Scriptural And Spiritual Ideas, Robert Brabenec May 1983

Using Mathematical Concepts To Illustrate Scriptural And Spiritual Ideas, Robert Brabenec

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1983

Christian mathematics faculty and students respond in differing ways to this idea of applying mathematics to Scripture, and vice-versa. Mathematics is man-made, while Scripture is inspired by God, so they should be disjoint entities. However, it is well known that the Scripture used analogies of familiar human objects and ideas in order to explain spiritual ideas. This paper discusses various mathematical concepts and how they illustrate Scriptural and spiritual ideas.

Migration is a complex social phenomenon whose causes, motivations and consequences are diverse. The economist, therefore, cannot presume the monopoly of its explanation. He, like specialists of other disciplines, emphasizes the variables of his concern. This monograph treats migration from an economic point of view; migration is conceptualized as a means of promoting efficient utilization of resources., an fovestment aiming at increasing the productivity of human resources, an investment which has costs and which also generates return (Schultz, 1971: 18, Bowan et al, 1967:875-98; Sjaastad, 1962:8-83.) Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between teachers' perceptions of how well they are meeting their self-actualization needs and their perceptions of satisfaction with the teaching profession. The review of related literature led to the development of the main hypothesis: "There is a direct relationship between teachers' perceptions of how well they are meeting their self-actualization needs and their perceptions of satisfaction with the teaching profession." Eight subhypotheses were developed which dichotomized segments of the population according to gender, age, years of experience, and grade level taught. The relationship between perceptions of self-actualization and perceptions of …

Conversion To The World View Of Alcoholics Anonymous: A Refinement Of Conversion Theory, David R. Rudy, Arthur L. Greil Jan 1983

Conversion To The World View Of Alcoholics Anonymous: A Refinement Of Conversion Theory, David R. Rudy, Arthur L. Greil

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Most empirical studies of the conversion process have focused on individuals who have come to espouse the world view of a deviant religious denomination or sect. Using observational data our research analyzes the conversion process by which individuals come to identify with the ideology propounded by Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.). A.A. provides prospective "alcoholics" with both a solution to drinking problems and an overarching world view with which to reinterpret their past experience. The A.A. conversion process can be divided into six phases: hitting bottom, first stepping, making a commitment, accepting your problem, telling your story, and doing Twelfth Step work. …

The Acquisition Of Sign Meaning In Deaf Children Of Hearing Parents, Sue Livingston Jan 1983

The Acquisition Of Sign Meaning In Deaf Children Of Hearing Parents, Sue Livingston

Publications and Research

How do Deaf children of non-signing parents go about the process of assigning signs to their referents? It seems that much like hearing children, they initially use signs in their everyday conversations that do not always mean the referents they were intended to mean. The findings presented here are the result of six case studies of semantic development over a period of 15 months of children ranging in age from six to sixteen who were raised without sign language and had no instruction in sign language until being placed in a New York City school where sign language was used. …
