The purpose of this report is to describe an internship conducted at the Michigan State Department of Education. The experience focused on gaining an understanding of the State Board of Education and Adult Extended Learning Services, a unit of the State Department of Education. The intern was also given the task of rewriting and updating one of the Department of Education handbooks: "Administrative Guide for Adult High School."

The internship was devoted to working with the superintendent as he implemented a plan to close schools, reassign students, and find a use for the closed buildings. A Study Of The Knowledge About Reading Concepts Of Principals Of Schools Holding Membership In The Association Of Christian Schools International, Maxine Edge Margesson

This study focused upon the amount of knowledge that elementary principals in schools holding membership in the Association of Christian Schools International have regarding primary reading instruction. The problem was based on the contention that the elementary principal is responsible for the instructional program in his or her school, and in order to offer quality supervision, he or she must be knowledgeable about curriculum.

Data were obtained from a research questionnaire completed by 220 principals and 1,065 elementary teachers. The questionnaire contained 40 statments relating to primary-grade reading. Seven categories of reading concepts were utilized: (1) word recognition, (2) comprehension, …

This report summarizes a 15-week internship with Senior Services, Incorporated, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, served during the Spring and Summer terms, 1983.

The purpose of the internship was to acquaint the intern with the leadership performance, duties, responsibilities, and actions of the executive director and field supervisor in increasing and maintaining a low income minority senior citizen's nutritional outreach service. The objectives of increasing the number of low income minority senior citizen participants and prepared nutritional sites were the major emphasis of this internship. In addition, the intern was involved with proposal writing and the hiring of two outreach workers.

Elementary principals have a major role in the educational system. However, research addressing their priorities, activities, and performance is limited. Studies indicate a relationship between principal performance and school effectiveness and achievement of students. This investigation identified factors which may be associated with principal effectiveness: length of time in the principalship, gender, level of self-confidence, and leader style. It proposed that there is a relationship between principals' priorities and activities. It predicted that there are differences in the priorities and degree of participation in activities between new and experienced principals, male and female principals, self-confident and less self-confident principals, and …

This study investigated the relationship between leadership style and perceived performance in selected tasks. Using the 99 UniServ Directors of the Michigan Education Association, the objective of the study was to provide additional criteria that could be used to assist organizational leaders in assignment of staff to areas of specialization. The selected task areas were (a) negotiations, (b) arbitration, (c) writing, (d) political action, (e) public relations, (f) member counseling, (g) leadership training, and (h) organizing.

The Calhoun Intermediate School District serves Calhoun County which is located in Southwestern Michigan, centered approximately at the intersection of I-94 and 1-69. The school system serves students K-12 in 15 individual school districts. It serves as a link between local districts and the State Department of Education, furnishing services that single districts find difficult or impossible to perform. A Correlational Analysis Between The Teacher Perceiver Interview And Teacher Success In The Chippewa Valley School System, Richard J. Zaranek

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between the score attained on the Teacher Perceiver Interview instrument used in the Chippewa Valley School System and teacher success. Specifically, this study analyzed teacher success by having each respondent complete a self-satisfaction instrument and by having each respondent's immediate supervisor complete an administrative evaluation about the respondent. Results obtained on these instruments were then correlated to the Teacher Perceiver Interview results attained by the respondents at the time of their hire. This correlation was determined by using a Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient.

This study was designed to investigate the accuracy with which selected student leaders from 30 public high schools in Macomb County, Michigan, reflected the opinions of the general student population of high school seniors in the same county. Specifically, data were collected which would determine the advisability of implementing change suggested by the opinions of the student leaders.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of job satisfaction and preferred work environment of community college administrators. Administrators from four southeast Lower Michigan community colleges were the population (N = 50). The administrators in expanding areas (N = 29) were compared with those in contrasting areas (N = 21). Members of each group completed a demographic questionnaire developed by the researcher as well as the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (Weiss et al., 1967) and the Work Environment Preference Schedule (Gordon, 1973). Survey instruments were mailed to each administrator and non-respondents were telephoned to determine reasons for noncompletion. …

In this study, an interdisciplinary approach was used to examine the problem of role stress and social support as a stress moderator. The purposes of this study were: (a) to determine the level of occupational stress for school principals and identify significant occupational stressors, (b) to measure the effects of social support in reducing role stress, (c) to note the characteristics of the effective providers of social support, and (d) to identify factors in the educational setting that can strengthen coping skills by providing for social support.

The study also identified and investigated model components of successful full-time community information/relations programs.

Financial support records of 11 local school districts identified as operating full-time community information/relations programs (community information/relations districts) were compared to those records established by a comparable sample group of local school districts which did not operate a program (traditional districts) during a five year period, 1977-1982. This study was an attempt to determine how the schools in three Southwestern Michigan counties implemented the decision of the July 17, 1970 Michigan State Supreme Court ruling which required all school districts to provide students with all necessary school supplies.
