Random Variables And A Sovereign God, Lloyd Montzingo
Random Variables And A Sovereign God, Lloyd Montzingo
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1981
This paper takes a brief look at the history of conflict between the concepts of chance and divine activity. After reviewing some evidence for randomness in the universe, present philosophical and theological views from four different scientists on this subject are presented. The discussion concludes with some questions and observations concerning those questions.

A Response To Professor Poythress’S “Science As Allegory”, Paul Devries
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1981
This paper critiques some of the arguments given by Vern Sheridan Poythress in his paper, Science as Allegory, particularly about the claims that the universe is poetry and that science is poetry.
Probabilistic Ways Of Thinking, Garnet Hauger
Probabilistic Ways Of Thinking, Garnet Hauger
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1981
Events of the tiniest probabilities occur every day, and yet we tend to think of these events as unusual and even miraculous. So what should be a Christian's response to such events? Beginning with some simple concepts of probability, this paper examines the role that chance plays in our lives.
The Development Of Algebraic Structures During The Nineteenth Century, Richard Stout
The Development Of Algebraic Structures During The Nineteenth Century, Richard Stout
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1981
I remember entering the faculty lounge one day while I was in graduate school and hearing a logician chiding some of the algebraists in the room. He said, "Don't you fellows ever get tired of just plus and times?" His remark, said in jest, had more to it than he may have realized. The fact that there is structure to algebra, represented by plus and times, was a vital discovery in the nineteenth century. It would lead algebra away from a reliance on numbers to a much more formal approach, one in which many different types of algebraic structures could …

An Integration Of Integrations Of Christianity And Mathematics—A Response To Harold Heie, Gene B. Chase
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1981
There are three general approaches taken to integrate Christianity and Mathematics: the applicational, the incarnation, and the philosophical. This paper discusses these views and responds to the approaches of Harold Heie.
Reality And Imagination In Mathematics And Religion, Dave Neuhouser
Reality And Imagination In Mathematics And Religion, Dave Neuhouser
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1981
What does either reality or imagination have to do with mathematics? What does either reality or imagination have to do with religion? The thesis of this paper is that mathematics and religion, both, should be closely related to reality and that imagination is essential in both areas. In fact, imagination is essential in our attempts to understand reality.

How To Put Tar In The Planet And Keep Feathers On The Eagles: The Best And Worst Of The Monthly Planet And Weekly Letters To An Alaskan Editor, Brian Blix
Environmental Studies Graduate and Undergraduate Scholarship
Undergraduate Problem Series: Huxley College of Environmental Studies, Western Washington State College.
John Muir helped a Presbyterian minister choose a site near the north end of the world's longest fjord for a mission in the year 1879. The Reverend S. Hall Young declared that "Haines Mission" would be founded for the benefit of the fierce Tlingit inhabitants. I do not know what "benefit" the Tlingits have received, but my guess is Haines, Alaska 99827.
David Clarke and a group of other fervent environmental professors chose a site near the south end of Western Washington University's campus for a cluster college, …

Tank Vessel Safety Regulations: The Role Of Maritime Education And Training In The United States, John B. Noll
Tank Vessel Safety Regulations: The Role Of Maritime Education And Training In The United States, John B. Noll
Theses and Major Papers
This paper examines the major details of the STCW Convention and the Maritime Education Act and their inter-relationships to the American Merchant Marine training pipeline. The various programs which provide entry-level, selected advanced, continuing education and refresher training for our tanker personnel are discussed. The educational value and current status of the utilization of shore-based simulators for "equivalency training" is examined in light of the increased sea training requirements presented in the STCW Convention. The inherent benefit of a well-balanced mix of simulator training and at-sea experience for the safe, professional operation of our Merchant Marine by the "human element" …
A High School Curriculum In Marine Environmental Issues: "The Sea - Use And Abuse" Part I, Martha J. Zimmerman
A High School Curriculum In Marine Environmental Issues: "The Sea - Use And Abuse" Part I, Martha J. Zimmerman
Theses and Major Papers
To the Teacher: The materials presented and developed in this learning activity packet involve dynamic, complex, and persistent environmental issues concerning man's interaction with the oceans and the marine environment. As we progress into the 1980's, many decisions effecting the marine world will be made within the political sphere. These decisions will have wide-spreading impacts into the economic and social areas as well. Some consequences will be observed immediately, and others perhaps more serious, defiant of detection, and in some instances even hazardous, may have delayed results. The complex interrelationships of land and oceanic environments, the fragility of the marine …

A High School Curriculum In Marine Environmental Issues: "The Sea - Use And Abuse" Part Ii, Martha J. Zimmerman
Theses and Major Papers
To the Student: As we progress into the 1980's, you will become more aware of a number of marine related environmental issues. Many of these complex marine issues will be decided within the political sphere of our society. These are not isolated issues, but rather complicated ones which impact a wide section of our economic and social lives. The issues we are discussing include: land use (especially in the coastal zone), the city of facilities (e.g. sewer treatment plants, power plants, nuclear power plants), and the drilling for oil and gas and minerals on submerged and continental shelf areas. Port …
