This study was a statewide survey that attempted to determine the value of Texas history programs and the status of the materials available. Information was gathered in a survey of selected schools with an Average Daily Attendance of at least 10,000 students during the 1979-1980 school year. The data was summarized and analyzed in eight tables. The conclusions of this study Indicate; (1) the movement to eliminate the required teaching of Texas history is in great disfavor with the teachers of Texas history; (2) the state required minimum of 24 hours of history is considered adequate; (3) most school districts …

This paper gives a brief summary of the perceptual-motor theories of Kephart, Cratty, and Delacato, and discusses some of the research resulting from their theories. It also includes a resource book of perceptual-motor activities covering the areas of gross-motor skills, fine-motor skills, spatial awareness, body image, and laterality/ directionality. The activities have been arranged in chronological order according to skill level. The resource book is a compilation of materials from a perceptual-motor workshop held in the summer of 1978 by the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

Human learning processes have long been topics of interest and research. Two processes, prototype and distinctive feature, were investigated in 20 kindergarteners in two groups of 10 each. I hypothesized that the prototype processing group would perform better than the distinctive feature group because of the age and probable cognitive development of the children. Group El was given instructions and trained to form prototypes of verbally presented nonsense words for classification. Group Eli was directed and trained to determine distinctive feature rules of the same nonsense words for classification. A transfer design was used to test learning. El reflected prototype …

A Demographic Study Of Emotionally Disturbed Hispanic Students Enrolled In The Public Schools Of Texas, Luis Manuel Mancha

A demographic study was made of the public schools in Texas and it was found that the majority of the emotionally disturbed students are White, non-Hispanic. At the same time, the results of the study indicated that the majority of the public schools in Texas are serving less than two percent of the total student enrollment with programs for the emotionally disturbed. Further examination indicated that overall, the public schools in Texas are failing to serve 12% of the student population with special education services. The purpose o£ the study was to determine if there is any significant difference in the performance, learning, and retention of a motor skill between mentally retarded and normal children of similar chronological or mental age. Subjects were categorized into one of three groups. One group (MR) consisted of 10 mentally retarded subjects. Another group (MA) consisted of 10 who were matched to the MR group on mental age. The third group (CA) consisted of 10 subjects matched to the MR group on chronological age. Each subject received twelve, 20 second trials with a 30 second rest interval between each …
