In this complex and often confusing country, reading is viewed by many people as the most important skill a child can acquire during his school years. Success in school, of both children and teachers, particularly in the elementary grades, is often measured by children's success in learning how to read. Reading is the tool that unlocks most knowledge for children and adults alike. As a person seeks employment the inability to read or the inability to read with facility greatly limits the opportunities.

Questionnaries concerning the nature of the state-required Ninth Grade Reading Programs were sent to principals of secondary schools in the Second Education District of Kentucky. The program, which had been in effect for two years, was studied as to the different organization, curriculum, students, faculty, resources, conclusions, and projections of each school involved an then compared to a standard reading program. It was found that Kentucky is a forerunner in the area of state requirements as to provision for help in reading for ninth grade students. Problem

An important concern of educators today is the prevalence of children with reading disabilities. There are many methods and materials with which to help these children. The problem is to coordinate some of these techniques and to find the best approach. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to combine the best from a number of methods into a new set of useable materials for learning disabled children.

Method

Several books and materials on teaching learning disabled children were read for background and information. Ideas obtained from the methods studied were then combined to form three different types of …
