The Environmental Crisis: The Effects Of Ecology Courses On High School Students, Carol C. Fletcher Dec 1971

The Environmental Crisis: The Effects Of Ecology Courses On High School Students, Carol C. Fletcher

Dissertations and Theses

It is a basic premise of this thesis that an environmental crisis exists in the world today and has been worsening at least since World War II. The crisis is evident in the population explosion, the deteriorating air and water quality, and the depletion of our natural resources. With the feeling that all persons must become aware, concerned, and involved with the environmental crisis if the trend is to be reversed, this study is concerned with one segment of the population – high school students.

Sociologists, and especially human ecologists, have not been concerned professionally with the environmental crisis, but …

Relationship Of Convergent And Divergent Teaching To Creative Performance, Robert Bruce Kibler

All Master's Theses

This study investigated the effect on test scores on the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. Form A, resulting from convergent and divergent methods of teaching fifteen half-hour mini-lessons in social studies to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Results favored the Divergent Group, and their scores were more widely dispersed. Recommendations included a follow-up study, replication of the experiment with variations in the sample and treatments, and investigation of the possible utility of a two-score achievement test.

The Teacher's Contingent Use Of Praise And Privilege To Improve Classroom Study Behavior, Margaret E. Taylor

All Master's Theses

It was the purpose of this experiment to determine if the study behavior of an entire classroom and two target students could be increased by teacher implementation of a program of contingent praise and privilege for appropriate study behavior. It was proposed in this study that a regular classroom teacher receiving instructions in the concepts of reinforcement theory from a school psychologist intern, would be able to elicit significant behavioral changes in the classroom as the result of the implementation of this contingency program.

A Comparative Investigation Of The Effects Of Frequent Testing Upon Achievement In Secondary Advanced Algebra, John Thomas Fullerton Aug 1971

A Comparative Investigation Of The Effects Of Frequent Testing Upon Achievement In Secondary Advanced Algebra, John Thomas Fullerton

All Master's Theses

Relatively speaking, few studies have concerned themselves with the problem of frequent testing, and as Keys pointed out, empirical evidence, uncomplicated by differences in the amount of testing material employed, on the effects of frequent testing is, at best, scarce (14:427). Also many studies used tests and test results for direct instruction, thus introducing additional variables. Furthermore, the choice of subjects and disciplines has been limited, the better part being taken from college psychology and sociology classes or high school science classes. This investigation was not an attempt to modify previous experiments, nor was it an attempt to identify which …

The Effectiveness Of Counselors As Judged By High School Graduates, Ray Y. Johnson

All Master's Theses

This study will attempt to test the following aspects of present counseling effectiveness in Washington high schools. After being asked, students will say: 1. Counselors are quite useful to them. 2. Their ideas about the counselor came mainly from discussion with their friends. 3. Counseling is mostly for vocational-educational reasons and not for personal reasons. 4. They recommended counseling to friends or fellow students and would do so again. 5. The high school counselor is an asset to their school. 6. There are several reasons why more students do not use high school counseling services. 7. High school counselors possess …

Problem Solving Ability And Effective Group Behavior Of Introductory Education Students, Gary Lewis Lord Aug 1971

Problem Solving Ability And Effective Group Behavior Of Introductory Education Students, Gary Lewis Lord

All Master's Theses

The need to understand group processes in the classroom and to use them to develop more effective learning is growing among educators. The group and its dynamics comprise significant conditions for learning and work either for or against the individual's development. One of the most significant learning developmental characteristics that is readily influenced by group variables is the individual's ability to solve problems. Not only is problem solving ability influenced by group variables, but it is through group process methods that this ability is most effectively learned. Thus, problem solving is believed to be a social skill. That group variables …

A Study Of The Status And Leadership Of Girls' Athletics And The Attitudes Of Teachers Of Girls' Physical Education Toward Girls' Athletics In The State Of Idaho, Connie M. Thorngren Aug 1971

A Study Of The Status And Leadership Of Girls' Athletics And The Attitudes Of Teachers Of Girls' Physical Education Toward Girls' Athletics In The State Of Idaho, Connie M. Thorngren

All Master's Theses

In 1969 a questionnaire was sent to all Idaho high schools concerning girls’ athletic programs and the attitudes of girls’ physical education teachers toward athletics. Eighty-seven percent of the questionnaires were returned, an indication of high interest in the subject area. Results showed moderate participation in most team sports and low participation in most individual sports. Teachers demonstrated favorable attitudes toward girls’ interscholastic athletics and indicated a need for enlarged programs. Money, facilities, and qualified coaches and officials were viewed as major concerns of girls’ programs.

Retention As A Function Of Competition And Cooperation In Learning, Neil Orin Combelic Aug 1971

Retention As A Function Of Competition And Cooperation In Learning, Neil Orin Combelic

All Master's Theses

Educators in our school systems continually try to determine what kind of motivational atmosphere should be established to obtain the fullest potential from every student that enters an institution of higher learning. Since our society is built on competition, many educators would like to increase competition among students in the classroom. Other educators point out that too much competition can be harmful, and would like to see students cooperatively motivated in the classroom.

The Effect Of Reading Achievement Of Seventh Grade Special Education Students Involved In A Tutoring Program, Kenneth A. Mattson Aug 1971

The Effect Of Reading Achievement Of Seventh Grade Special Education Students Involved In A Tutoring Program, Kenneth A. Mattson

All Master's Theses

Many variations of the tutorial concept have been presented and analyzed. Some programs have been professionally designed and have received federal grants while others have been organized by teachers and other innovators. These programs have involved graduate students, college students, interested members of the community, high school dropouts, and public students from elementary to high school. The greatest portion of these studies has been concerned with the effects of tutoring on those who received the benefits - the tutee. Few programs have been concerned with the effects of the tutoring sessions on the tutor. The problem then is to determine …

A Comparison Of Emphasis Of Training And On-The-Job Effectiveness Of Media Personnel, Roy E. Williams Aug 1971

A Comparison Of Emphasis Of Training And On-The-Job Effectiveness Of Media Personnel, Roy E. Williams

All Master's Theses

It has long been recognized in our society that formal training plays a strong role in the development of attitudes, and that attitudes are important determinants of behavior. Consequently, the behavior of one whose formal training has been oriented in a particular direction is often somewhat different from the behavior of one whose training has been oriented in a different direction. Does the training orientation of instructional materials personnel affect their on-the-job effectiveness? Will a person who is primarily oriented toward print materials be more or less effective in promoting the use of instructional materials than one whose orientation is …

Management Of Problem Behavior Through Peer Social Reinforcement, Nancy E. Bingell Aug 1971

Management Of Problem Behavior Through Peer Social Reinforcement, Nancy E. Bingell

All Master's Theses

For many years a difference of opinion has existed regarding the classroom placement of "emotionally disturbed" children into special classes. The majority of public school districts offer two placements into their special classes: heterogenous or homogeneous grouping. Homogeneous grouping of these children seems to cause a "boomeranging" effect on reinforcement of their disruptive behavior. We have not always found our answer for helping emotionally disturbed children through heterogeneous grouping. Since emotionally disturbed children usually have the ability or an above average ability to learn, a heterogeneous grouping may not be academically stimulating. Their classroom peers (children that are retarded, slow …
