The purpose of this study was to compare the achievement of a control group of children taught addition and subtraction of fractions in the traditional way with that of an experimental group taught by the Scott, Foresman approach. The factors under consideration were the ability to perform the basic operations required in adding and subtracting fractions, and the retention of ability to perform these skills.

Statement of the problem. There is a general conjecture among elementary school teachers that friendships and social preferences in the lower elementary grade fluctuate considerably, and that they tend to become increasingly more stable in the higher elementary grades, sometimes to the detriment of a well-ordered child society. Statements such as, “the younger ones don’t care with whom they are friendly,” and “Their best friends change every week” express the general feeling of instability and fluctuation in the lower grades. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of pupil IQ and sex upon the number of some immediate verbal and nonverbal reinforcements given by the teacher to the students in the regular classroom. Studies have been done which indicate some differentiation on the bases of socio-economic status and behavior. This study determined, by actual classroom observation, what differentiation in reinforcements was found on the bases of (a) pupil IQ, (b) sex of pupils, (c) sex of teachers. The relationship between verbal and nonverbal reinforcements was also investigated.
