A Case Study Exploring A Novice Kindergarten Teacher’S Perceptions And Practice Of The Multiliteracies Pedagogy In His Virtual Kindergarten Classroom, Lian Chang

Teachers faced many challenges as they transitioned to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase of technology brought the concept of multiliteracies, broadening the term literacy to include the social and cultural backgrounds of students (Baguley et al., 2010), by acknowledging multimodality to represent and communicate using images, words, sounds and digital media (Walsh, 2010). This case study aims to explore how a kindergarten teacher understood and implemented literacy and the multiliteracies pedagogy in an online environment. On June 30, 2016, the Ontario Ministry of Education released The Kindergarten Program, a document which outlined the expectations to be taught and the pedagogical approaches to be used in all publicly funded Ontario kindergarten classrooms with a mandatory implementation date of September 2016. School-based kindergarten is a place where Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) and schooling practices meet and overlap. This initiative has resulted in many changes including a legislated partnership between Early Childhood Educators and kindergarten teachers under the umbrella of the Ontario Ministry of education.
