This study examines the initiation and maintenance of rapport between teachers and students in kindergarten through second grade classrooms. Three teachers participated in phenomenological interviews to identify what strategies they employ when initiating and maintaining rapport with their students as well as the perceived benefits of student-teacher rapport. Research has shown that there are several effective strategies for initiating rapport with students, but if this effort is not maintained throughout the school year, the quality of student-teacher rapport can weaken. Self-Efficacy And Its Effect On Student Achievement In Reading And Math, Morgan Van Hulzen

This action research study investigated the degree of relationship between elementary teachers’ self-efficacy in math and reading and student achievement in math and reading in an elementary school in southeast South Dakota. The participants were 279 students in grades three through five along with 13 third through fifth grade teachers. Using NWEA Growth Map Test data, a comparison in student achievement in math and reading was made between students with highly self-efficacious teachers and students whose teachers reported low self-efficacy. Schools are a social environment. Students are learning how to interact with others, both peers and adults outside their immediate family. The classroom teacher is an important part of academic instruction but also with respect to socialization. Teachers and students form a relationship, the quality of which is both important and varied. This study examined teachers’ (a) perceptions of the impact of policy on their teaching and professional development, (b) knowledge of policy initiatives and the protocols their schools have in place to support them, (c) perceptions of policy, and (d) self-efficacy for literacy instruction and professional development’s impact on it. The investigation focused on three policy initiatives: Response to Intervention, the Common Core State Standards, and the Annual Professional Performance Review program, New York State’s teacher evaluation system. Praise notes have the potential to positively influence student behavior and relationships. Few studies have examined the social validity of praise, however, and these studies have focused on students' perceptions. The purpose of this study was to describe student, parent, and teacher perceptions of a school-wide praise note intervention at a Title I elementary school. Twenty-three teachers, 203 parents, and 203 students completed surveys regarding a pre-existing praise note intervention. Surveys consisted of 13 quantitative items and two open-ended questions. Quantitative and qualitative results indicate that participants had positive perceptions of praise notes. Participants also believed that praise notes helped …

Educators concur that teacher competency requires more than teaching knowledge and skills; competency requires appropriate professional dispositions. The development of professional dispositions is an expected outcome of teacher education programs. Since 2002, program accreditation has been contingent on documentation that prospective teachers have met national standards for dispositions. The body of educational research on disposition assessment has been growing. Research on disposition learning and development, however, has been impeded by the prevailing conceptualization of dispositions as fixed traits resistant to change. The purpose of the study was to survey the Elementary Teacher Education Programs (ETEPs) of Iowa's three public institutions of higher learning and Iowa's three largest non-public institutions of higher learning. Using a questionnaire and interview method, the survey was to answer two questions: 1. Do (ETEPs) at Iowa's six sample institutions of higher learning prepare preservice teachers through an IGE Teacher Education Program for IGE elementary schools in the state? 2.
