Formal education of master level genetic counseling trainees has occurred since the 1970s however, unlike other health care disciplines there has been no research conducted into their learning styles. Practice-based learning is widely utilized in the medical school setting however, it is unknown how extensive this teaching modality is used in the genetic counseling training programs. Use of this experiential learning technique has proven to be perceived positively by trainees in other fields. Furthermore, assessments of student satisfaction within genetic counseling training programs have not been performed. The purpose of this study was to determine the variables that affect genetic …

This quantitative study examined the factors that impact urban teachers' efficacy and their ability to motivate urban students within their classroom. Teacher efficacy was the primary factor observed in this study. Five dimensions were created to guide the study: motivation, administrative support, teacher power, teacher morale, and a teacher's teaching method. There were significant differences found in all dimensions that supported the fact that efficacy measurements influence student motivation. Such factors as the number of days that a teacher missed in a given school year and the teacher's grade level were found to be significant factors that determine a teacher's …

There has been no shortage of calls to improve teaching. Even the federal law, the NoChild Left Behind Act, has mandated high quality teaching in the nation's public schools. But the question still remains "What makes an effective teacher, particularly of African -American males in an urban environment?"African- American males in public schools are the hardest hit, having the lowest achievement rates on standardized tests and the highest dropout rates of approximately 50 or more. The majority comes from low social economic status and single parent families having limited learning resources and facilities at home. Their behavior leads to frequent suspensions, …

How Black artists-othered and positioned at the margins of "civilization" in the United States-construct knowledge, context, and historical memory is informative to urban education research and policy. The exploration of this reflects the wisdom of an African proverb that others will tell the story of the struggle should it not first be told by those who live it. To create reciprocity between participants and the researcher, this study employed participatory methods and critical analysis of data from interview sessions, observation, works of art, journal reflections, and information from existing studies and artist documentaries. The study uncovers an approach to the …

Factors Associated With Educational Mobility;Voices Of Highly Transient Elementary Students, Rebecca Anne Vaslavsky

ETD Archive

Student mobility - students changing schools for reasons other than being promoted to the next school level - is often correlated with negative academic, social and emotional consequences (Sanderson, 2004). Reporting transient students' voices and their experiences in the early grades is crucial to providing educators and other school personnel with highly valuable qualitative data of the struggles and coping strategies of these students that they can then use to craft prevention and intervention strategies. This study describes the experiences of highly mobile, urban elementary school students and provides educational professionals with an in-depth view of mobile students' experiences. Using …

The Effect Of A Dropout Prevention Program For Black High School Males In The Cleveland Metropolitan School District, RenéE T. Willis

There is a new endangered species in this country - the black male. The education of the black male in the United States has recently garnered much-needed national attention. Two national reports in 2010 have heightened the awareness of the fact that the black male student is not successfully navigating our public school systems, often dropping out. Unfortunately, it now appears that this chorus of pessimism has entrenched itself in the minds of black boys, teachers, and even parents. At the very least, there are economic and moral reasons as to why we must help our black male students graduate …

The focus on the achievement gap for minority students is an issue facing many school districts across the county. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation highlighted the fact that many minority students are not achieving at or above expected levels in classrooms across America. Teacher quality is found to be an important ingredient of a thriving school. This reflects the NCLB requirement that all schools employ effective and highly qualified teachers. However, teachers cannot be evaluated merely on their credentials, such as attaining graduate degrees or the number of years of teaching experience. Furthermore, politicians, teachers, and economists have …
