The purpose of this action research was to examine the disengagement of male students in remediated English Language Arts (ELA) classes. Male students are disproportionately represented in remediated ELA classes, which indicates that male students are not progressing in their literacy skills at the same rate as females. Data was gathered from an ELA section of male students through a Google survey, a group interview, and two observations of students in a co-taught class. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, school buildings across the United States shut their doors and transitioned students and teachers to remote learning, most often utilizing internet-based technology to provide either asynchronous or synchronous lessons. This paper examines the new literary format of video games and argues that video games can be studied as their own text in the English Language Arts classroom through the lenses of film theory, narratology, and ludology. In order to be precise, the paper offers explicit connections to each of the reading and writing standards supplied by the Common Core State Standards.
