Where's The Rigor? A Study Of Direct Instruction Vs. Inquiry-Based Learning In Math Education, Brianna Rae Warner
Where's The Rigor? A Study Of Direct Instruction Vs. Inquiry-Based Learning In Math Education, Brianna Rae Warner
Honors Projects
Research suggests that there is an absence of rigor in high school mathematics classes. Since curricula is often used to guide instruction, an analysis of direct instruction and inquiry-based learning curricula was conducted to investigate how rigor is integrated into these divergent approaches for presenting content to high school mathematics students, based on the expectation of rigor aligned with the Common Core State Standards regarding how (1) conceptual understanding, (2) procedural skill and fluency, and (3) applications are developed in the text. The results of the analysis show that neither style for writing curriculum is in alignment with the CCSS. …

The Effect A School District’S Inservice, About The Implicit Curriculum Of School Functioning, Has On Educators’ Attitudes Towards Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Debra Louise Barton
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Educators’ attitudes affect the success of their students. When children have a variety of challenges, such as children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), educators’ attitudes towards these children are specifically influenced, affecting the success of the child. Research has shown that professional development can improve the educator’s attitudes, therefore increasing the success of the students. School functioning skills, such as obtaining knowledge from a variety of formats and following class rules that vary from teacher to teacher and setting to setting, are especially difficult for children with ASD because such skills are not usually taught. They are part of the …

Examining The Operant Function Of Feedback: Evaluation Of The Temporal Location Of Feedback, Elian Aljadeff-Abergel
Examining The Operant Function Of Feedback: Evaluation Of The Temporal Location Of Feedback, Elian Aljadeff-Abergel
Dissertations
Despite the common use of feedback in most training settings, it is not yet clear what behavioral function feedback serves. Most researchers consider feedback to function as a consequence and advocate for its immediate delivery in the form of “on the spot” supervision or after-session conferencing. The literature suggests that when compared, “on the spot” supervision is found more effective than after session conferencing. In spite these findings, most supervisors are still implementing after-session conferencing. This is probably due to the limited feasibility of performing “on the spot” supervision when supervising teachers implementing whole class or small group instruction. One …

Direct, Hands-On Or Inquiry Instruction A Study Of Instructional Sequencing And Motivation In The Science Classroom, Jamie Vander Wiede
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Currently, a debate exists between the strengths and weaknesses of direct and inquiry instruction. Inquiry instruction is related to positive effect on learner motivation whereas supporters of direct instruction point to its ability to adequately support learners’ working memories (Hmelo-Silver, Duncan, & Chinn, 2007; Kirschner, Sweller, & Clark, 2006; Kuhn, 2007; Sweller, 1988). This study examined the possibility of combining the best features of both inquiry and direct instruction by sequencing them together. A two-part lesson on electrical circuits was presented in three separate sequences of instruction to middle school students to determine if differences in student motivation and academic …

A Study Of The Effects Of Constructivist Based Vs. Traditional Direct Instruction On 8th Grade Science Comprehension, Clair T. Berube
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
Studies conducted nationwide over the past several decades point consistently to the evidence that American school children lag behind several other countries in science scores. Problems arise from this dilemma, including the question of the ability of our youngsters to compete nationally and globally in the sciences as adults. Current research in this area of scores currently studies mostly mathematics. The few studies conducted concerning science mainly highlight students in other countries and neglects minorities and females regarding outcomes.
By contrast, this study investigated the effects of teacher types (also defined as teaching styles or classroom orientation) on student outcomes …
