Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), consist of the negative and traumatic events that have happened in the early years of a person’s life. The focus here is on childhood trauma. There are many types of trauma, including, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, physical and emotional neglect, exposure to domestic and general violence, as well as household substance abuse, mental illness, racism, parental separation/divorce, and others. Trauma produces both physical and psychological challenges and can disrupt the brain’s development from birth through 18 years of age, causing permanent damage and issues, which we will discuss throughout this thesis.
