The Bereaved Songwriters' Project, Laura A. Figueroa
The Bereaved Songwriters' Project, Laura A. Figueroa
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental study was to evaluate bereaved individuals’ responses to a reflective songwriting program intervention (RSPI). The purposive and convenient sample included 30 bereaved adults who were members of the teaching staff at a private, Christian, K-12 school in the southeastern United States and/or past or present members of the church with which the school was affiliated. The researcher developed a simple and succinct RSPI in which study participants were prompted to create an original musical piece using personal reflections, memories, and descriptions in song form to commemorate a deceased loved one. The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being …
Another Empty Seat: Educators’ Experiences With Trauma And Grief After A Student’S Death, Lori G. Berryman
Another Empty Seat: Educators’ Experiences With Trauma And Grief After A Student’S Death, Lori G. Berryman
Education Doctorate Dissertations
This phenomenological study utilizes narrative inquiry to analyze four teachers’ perceptions of their lives, occupations, and institutional expectations following a student’s death. Through participant interviews and personal reflections, the researcher observes the effects of a student’s death through a Contemporary Trauma Theory framework. Through this lens, trauma-narratives are a powerful tool in helping those affected by loss reframe the events and understand them in a clearer context. Participants indicated that there is an increase of concern for the parents of the deceased, feelings of guilt and regret, and retraumatization due to the lasting presence of the deceased student. Perceptions of …

Life After Death: An Autoethnography Of A Teacher’S Journey Through Personal Grief And Loss, Kimberlyn Oliver
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
This study sought to understand how grief and loss affected me on a personal and professional level. Additionally, the process of grief and loss and its effects on teacher performance was examined. The death of a loved one often leaves a person feeling a great deal of emotions. As an educator, it is incredibly difficult to process grief and loss at work due to the demands of working with students all day. Nine participants were recruited for this study and I used semi-structured interviews to discover more about the experiences of these educators while they dealt with the loss of …

Grief Of Adolescents With Learning Disabilities: Proceed With Caution, Matthew J. Bateman
Graduate Education Student Scholarship
This research review and student-centered manual explores the findings and assertions of various studies relating to the antecedents and trends of grief among adolescence with learning disabilities. The meta-analysis explores numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and accredited studies in an attempt to gain a greater understanding of the current landscape of youth sadness, with a special focus on youths with learning disabilities. As multiple studies have indicated, overwhelming grief and disability harassment is a serious problem plaguing American youths. The reviewed literature also indicated that youths with learning disabilities are at a greater risk of experiencing prolonged episodes of sadness. Although …
Indigo Was Our Class Pet: An Exploration Of Death In Children’S Literature, Nella Williams
Indigo Was Our Class Pet: An Exploration Of Death In Children’S Literature, Nella Williams
Graduate Student Independent Studies
Death is a complicated and emotionally weighty subject. Therefore, discussing it can be taboo in early childhood classrooms. Although this is meant to protect children, the lack of discussion limits their mental and emotional processing of bereavement and ultimately undermines their understanding of death. After teaching in a Pre-K classroom with a terminally ill reptile, the author was inspired to write a children’s book about the death of a class pet. The text reviews typical developmental milestones for five-year-olds, the target age of the book. Fives are at an age where their frameworks for understanding the world are shifting; therefore, …

Using Narrative And Re-Membering Conversations In A Bereavement Group With Students Impacted By Suicide, Krystal J. Howard, Caryn L. Kruse
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
To date, there have been no studies utilizing a narrative bereavement model for students impacted by suicide, in a group counseling setting. The present project intends to fill a gap in the literature. We sought to answer the research question, “Do narrative lines of inquiry, specifically re-membering conversations, help to ameliorate the pain of a loved one’s death by suicide?” We hypothesized that re-membering conversations would help to reduce pain, based on the premise that re-membering conversations reconnect the bereaved to the life of their deceased loved one, using a narrative which allows the life, values, thoughts, and wishes of …
