Bachelor degree attainment in Tennessee is lower than the national average, which can have a dramatic impact on the quality of life for Tennesseans. Postsecondary institutions have been tasked with increasing the number of students who graduate, and this begins with retention of students. Retention of first-year students is a puzzle for institutions, however, the importance of retention cannot be minimized. The University of Tennessee at Martin has implemented an online Parent Portal to intentionally support the assistance of parents in increasing student success and retention. This research study was designed to examine the relationship between the use of open and closed student selection systems for the enrollment of students in Advanced Placement (AP) educational services at the high school level and student academic achievement. The quantitative portion of this study examined the relationship between the use of a particular student selection system and stakeholder perceptions of a school’s educational environment, while the qualitative portion examined the stakeholder perceptions of student selection systems. This study examined the effect of middle school student mobility on standardized test achievement in mathematics and reading. The variables of gender and poverty were also examined in the context of their relationship to a student’s mobility. The data set consisted of the mathematics and reading scores of 9,083 middle school students in a large Tennessee school system of approximately 42,000 students. The first research question asked if there were any differences between mobile and non-mobile students on the mathematics and reading sections of Tennessee Comprehensive Achievement Program Achievement Test (TCAP). This study examined attributes of self-directed learning (SDL) in students, grades 8 through 12, taking online courses through a state-wide online program in the Southeastern United States. The study investigated whether distinct latent classes of SDL exist; whether there was a significant difference in SDL according to gender, ethnicity, and grade level; and whether significantly different online course completion, online final grade, or GPA were associated with SDL class membership. Existing data from 780 enrollments included masked demographic and achievement data, and responses to the 12-item Self-directed Learning Inventory (SDLI) with responses based on a five-point Likert scale. This study examined the possible relationship between student age and student gender on academic achievement on a state mandated assessment for a cohort of North Georgia elementary school students in their first, second, and third grade years. Study results indicated that student age had a statistically significant impact on academic achievement for students in their first and third grade years on the mathematics portion of the assessment. Older students within the cohort scored at higher academic levels of achievement on the mathematics assessment than did younger students.
