Adolescence is a critical juncture in the process of identity development and has implications for secondary-level students. This project connects the topics of adolescent identity development with literature instruction at the secondary level, investigating the question “How can secondary language arts teachers support healthy identity development in adolescent learners using text selection and instructional activities?” A literature review provides a theoretical basis of adolescent identity development, including foundational theories such as Erik Erikson’s psychosocial development theory and contemporary ideas like Kimberlé Crenshaw’s work on intersectionality. According to Hudson, Koh, Moore, and Binks-Cantrell, (2020), The National Assessment of Educational Progress’s (NAEP) 2019 testing data revealed that 32% of U.S. fourth-grade students are reading below basic levels. This issue calls for interventions to increase reading achievement levels for elementary students. One way to accomplish this is to increase studies regarding what motivates caregivers to read to children. This present study examines how caregivers perceived the at-home read-aloud experience for children in primary grades: kindergarten through second grade. Only limited research has been completed that examines the impact of teaching outlining on improving ADHD students’ writing skills and perceptions about writing. An abundance of research demonstrates high school students with ADHD struggle with writing and organization skills. This study investigated the impact of using the POW + TREE outlining strategy on high school students with ADHD preparing a composition and how using this strategy impacted a high school student with ADHD’s perception of writing.
