Enabling Change: Faculty And Student Perceptions Of Blended Learning, Ronald Washington

Theses & Dissertations

The philosopher Plato in his Seventh Epistle argued that the technology of writing is an insufficient means of society conveying knowledge and obtaining truth (Neel, 1988). Many insights from his rhetorical works however are etched in history by this technology. As society moves further into the information age, the relevance of blended learning in higher education is taking on greater significance (Garrison & Vaughan, 2008). Higher education institutions are on the verge of another significant paradigm shift in the dissemination of knowledge and truth. The Potential For Using Adaptive And Assignable Instructional Technology To Increase Student Agency And Achievement, Blair Allen Mishleau

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research question in this capstone was: How might teachers’ use of personalized learning in elementary reading through adaptive and assignable instructional technology programs lead to accelerated student achievement and agency? This curriculum development capstone started with researching the current literature on blended learning, instructional technology and student agency/achievement. From there, a survey for teachers was created to probe their mindset on technology’s place in the classroom. Using the Design Thinking Process, a curriculum was then developed that leveraged both the literature review done along with the teacher survey. This curriculum, a prototype, will be tested after the capstone and …

Conceptualizing Blended Learning Engagement, Lisa R. Halverson Jul 2016

Conceptualizing Blended Learning Engagement, Lisa R. Halverson

Theses and Dissertations

Learner engagement, or the involvement of the student's cognitive and emotional energy to accomplish a learning task, has been called "the holy grail of learning" (Sinatra, Heddy, & Lombardi, 2015, p. 1) because of its correlations to academic achievement, persistence, and satisfaction. In the 21st century, learning will be increasingly "blended," combining face-to-face with computer-mediated instruction. Research is already exploring learner engagement in blended contexts, but no theoretical framework guides inquiry or practice. Developing models and measures of the factors that facilitate learner engagement is important to the advancement of the domain. This multiple-article format dissertation addresses the theoretical gap …

Web 2.0 Tools And Communities Of Practice: Bridging Gaps In Novice Teacher Training, Stacey Donaldson Jan 2016

Web 2.0 Tools And Communities Of Practice: Bridging Gaps In Novice Teacher Training, Stacey Donaldson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Novice teachers do not have sufficient opportunities to troubleshoot real-world teaching situations prior to having their own classrooms. Antiquated professional development (PD) models lack the collaboration element that provides authentic application of concepts. This qualitative case study was conducted to fill a gap in research on novice teachers' voluntary participation in an online community of practice. The study explored how the situated learning in this virtual community addressed the cognitive and social needs of early career teachers as they made the theory to practice connections. The community of practice framework and the social learning theories supported socialization as essential in …

Examining U.S. Middle School Students' Achievement In A Blended Learning Environment, Bernadette Ortiz-Brewster

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Abstract

U.S. middle schools are increasing offering blended learning curricula that integrates virtual and face-to-face instruction, but the effectiveness of this mode of instruction at the middle school level has not been adequately explored. This investigation provides additional data to the current body of knowledge related to blended learning as a viable option for middle school students. The theoretical framework for this investigation derives from Lev Vygotsky's social development theory and Jean Piaget's constructivist theory of knowledge. The central research question focused on the difference in achievement scores between 6th grade students participating in a virtual course as compared to …
