The Evolving Executive: Provisional Decrees And Their Impact On Brazil's Executive-Legislative Relationship, Lance L. Arberry

Theses

Comparatively, the lawmaking process in presidential systems is often comprised of negotiations between a legislative body, tasked with authoring and legislating laws, and an executive, who must authorize and administer the enactment of the law. While executives are often empowered with certain constitutional powers to help influence the lawmaking process, these powers are typically constrained and supervisory in nature. Presidents are rarely given broad-and-discretionary legislative powers, since lawmaking is ultimately the responsibility of the legislative body; however, this does not hold true for the case of Brazil. Following the adoption of Brazil’s 1988 Constitution, Presidents were empowered with the ...

Childhood is represented on Australian television advertising so frequently as to be commonplace. Traversing childhood, cultural and media studies disciplines, this thesis works to disrupt and unsettle taken for granted and exclusionary cultural assumptions about childhood that emerge through contemporary television advertisements. I conduct social semiotic and discourse analyses across a corpus of 330 advertisements spanning 2006 to 2012, considering the ways the Australian childhood subject is discursively produced through the advertisements. The television advertisements are found to construct Australian childhood subjectivities in ways that are limiting in terms of race, space, gender and social class. Considering the role of ...

Riding The Wave: An Exploration Of Principals’ Experiences Leading Their Schools Through And Beyond Critical Incidents, Barbara E. Myors

Theses

When a critical incident engulfs a school community, principals have key management roles in the incident and aftermath, as well as responsibility for successful outcomes, particularly for the wellbeing of staff, students and parents. In the past three decades in particular, researchers have considered the incidences of violence and environmental disasters in school settings and their impact on students, teachers and counsellors (Brack, Hill & Brack, 2009; Lindle, 2008). Education systems have produced policies, and researchers have written manuals, to guide ...

In typically developing infants, the prosodic and repetitive characteristics of speech and song directed to infants are viewed as features of the prelinguistic language environment associated with communication development. While there is a correlation between attending to infant-directed speech and language outcomes in ...

Middle Class Youth And Education In Neoliberal India, Andrew Deuchar May 2013

Middle Class Youth And Education In Neoliberal India, Andrew Deuchar

Theses

Economic reform and structural adjustment in India has undermined state institutions through which the middle classes have historically reproduced their advantage. Education has been profoundly affected by increasing privatisation and a reduction in government subsidies, which in turn has implications for its accessibility, quality and utility. Given that education has historically been central to the processes of class formation for the lower middle classes, my primary concern is to analyse the capacity of this social group to reproduce their advantage through education in the neoliberal era.
