Change is an intricate and complex process. This paper explores a non-content, non-outcome driven model of the process of change that can be expressed mathematically. It explores the process of change as a means to help raise awareness of change that may lead to intentionality of change, more effective process of change and changer agency over their process. The preeminent component of the process of change is motivation; subsequently the changer’s and teacher’s understandings of those motivations is paramount, for both teaching and curriculum development. Inside Stories: Stories Within, Personal Narrative In The Classroom, Carol Block

This discussion of a project conducted in 2004 involved two ESOL Middle School Students. The project used personal narrative and autobiographical elements to produce booklets based on these students’ experiences which created a bridge into the academic community, for themselves and their families. This paper discusses the elements that made this project successful and the reasons that personal narrative is so powerful and meaningful for all students and, most especially, second language learners.

This paper details the process and results of an experimental project-based curriculum for a college preparatory ESL course and its effects on student motivation. The course, designed to appeal to students’ desire for variety, community and self-expression, was divided into three modules, each with a different focus. Participants were international adults studying English at a private school in Austin, Texas. Results indicated that the course structure and content can play a large role in students’ motivation levels. Course documents are appended.

This paper details collaborative professional development with a focus on classroom assessment and evaluation of Korean University students. The observations, opinions, and conclusions reported herein are based on committee work carried out by the author at Dongguk University during the fall semester of 2007. Members of the committee were first asked to define areas of assessment and evaluation of students that either interested them, or that they found problematic. This paper examines and discusses the effects of integrating students’ perceived needs and interests in the planning and implementation of lessons plans to their attitudes towards English and their self-evaluations in the four skills and grammaring. The lesson plans were based on the prototypes developed by the Bureau of Secondary Education of the Department of Education in the Philippines. It particularly deals with students’ attitudes towards English and their self-evaluations in the four skills and grammaring and investigates the correlation between attitudes, the four skills, and grammaring.

This paper examines the integration of authentic cultural experience into the foreign language curriculum through the use of guided imagery, line drawings, and a WebQuest designed to facilitate the creation of an imaginary friend living within a country where the target language is spoken. The student uses these techniques to vicariously communicate with and experience a proscribed facet of that imaginary friend’s life. This paper explores the definition of classroom management and establishes the author’s definition of classroom management and the underlying principles behind it. Thereafter, it examines some aspects of the author’s system of classroom management, specifically, the classroom as a Safe Space, behavior management, the teacher as a facilitator and the classroom environment. Finally, the paper concludes with an appeal to educators to reflect on their own classroom management practices and offers resources for those wishing to further explore the subject.
