Mainstreaming the gifted third- grader in reading should be accomplished through the implementation of a modified curriculum that meets the child's unique educational and specialized needs. This curriculum should be process and product oriented . Process modifications should include the use of higher levels of thinking, inductive reasoning, reasoning strategies, freedom of choice, and open-endedness . It should include appropriate changes of pacing and a variety of teaching models . The curriculum should result in a product that is based on instruction. This curriculum should be enriched with literature that exhibits fluent, flexible, original, and elaborative writing.

Reading instruction activities were developed to be used with trade books in third grade to supplement the basal reading program. Activities developed included comprehension questions and a cloze unit for each selected trade book, as well as general creative and enrichment post-reading·assignments to provide students with reading and writing practice.

Methods and procedures for teaching reading readiness skills to primary Spanish-speaking children were developed. The methods and procedures were developed to enrich the basic teaching of reading programs and to provide a means for development of specific skills that the standard program failed to develop for the limited English speakers. Each procedure contains step-by-step directions for the teacher to combine with current methods of the teaching of reading.

Children's literature can enliven and enrich a social studies program. The role of children's literature in content subjects, especially social studies on the elementary level was studied. The types of children's literature which can be used in social studies, namely informational books, biographies, historical fiction, were also studied. In addition bibliographies were consulted for repeated mention of the best selections. Based upon the findings cited above a selected annotated bibliography of selections of poetry and children's books was produced for use in a fifth grade study of the United States.

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the following questions: 1. Did the clients of the Learning center increase their scores in reading and math after completion of the PLATO program? 2. What percentage of students who completed the PLATO program were placed into either employment training program or directly into employment? 3. What percentage of students dropped out of the program after their start with the PLATO system? 4. Were the grade equivalencies (4.0 to 5.9) too narrow to allow maximum participation in the PLATO program by the clients of JTPA?

The purpose of this study is to show that instructional methods designed for right-brained students will make a significant difference in the reading achievement scores of the students when compared with the scores of right-brained sixth grade students not receiving these instructional methods.
The subjects were sixth grade students who use the right hemisphere of the brain to a greater degree than the left hemisphere. The subjects' cerebral preference was determined by a test known as the Cerebral Preference Index (CPI). Ten students each were chosen from two sixth grade classes. The Wentzville R-IV School District initiated a pilot program using the SUCCESS in Reading a nd Writing approach to teaching reading in the Fall of 1984. This study was conducted to compare the effects of the SUCCESS approach on the vocabulary , comprehension , attitudes , and behavior of the students participating in the pilot program to those who were taught in the Houghton-Mifflin basal reading program . Text specific reading/learning strategies that reflect recent theoretical research in the reading process were incorporated into the 10th grade world history curriculum. These methods were intended to afford success for a specific group of students who had a history of failure and so lead those students toward independent reading and learning. They were also intended to motivate the world history teachers to use procedures that are congruent with the findings of research in reading and learning.
