Parent Perceptions Of Familiarity And Satisfaction With Placement Staffings, Teri Lynn Mayer Jan 1985

Parent Perceptions Of Familiarity And Satisfaction With Placement Staffings, Teri Lynn Mayer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined whether parents who had participated in a pre-staffing conference indicate greater knowledge about placement staffings when compared to parents who did not have specific, pre-staffing information. Also examined was the participants' subsequent level of satisfaction with their participation during the placement staffing, and general outcome of the staffing. The subjects were 24 parents who attended either their first or second placement staffing in the 1984-85 school year. Participants were divided into two groups. Eighteen parents who had attended a placement staffing in the fall of 1984 constituted the control group. Six parents who at the time of …

Differential Diagnosis Of Learning Disabled, Behaviorally Disabled, And Mentally Disabled Preschool Children Using The Kaufman-Assessment Battery For Children (K-Abc), Jackie Navara Loos

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Many theories concerning intelligence have been proposed throughout the years and have served as the bases for the development of an array of intelligence measures. A relatively new theory, proposed by Luria (1966a), postulated that intelligence involved simultaneous and successive processing. The simultaneous-successive theory served a.s the underlying basis for the recently developed intelligence test, the Kaufman-Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC). This test, published in 1983, has been correlated with many already established measures of achievement and intelligence (Kaufman & Kaufman, 1983). The K-ABC test includes a Simultaneous Processing scale, a Sequential Processing scale, a Mental Processing Composite scale, a …

A Comparison Of The Actual And Ideal Perceptions Of The School Psychologist’S Role, David Arthur Curry Jan 1985

A Comparison Of The Actual And Ideal Perceptions Of The School Psychologist’S Role, David Arthur Curry

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The professional role of the school psychologist has been studied for over thirty years. The school psychologist has traditionally spent the greatest percentage of professional time engaged in testing and assessment functions. Concerns have arisen as to the effectiveness of this traditional role. School psychologists, as well as other related professionals, have indicated a desire for a greater emphasis on the Consultation function within the ideal role of the school psychologist and a decrease in emphasis on the assessment functions. Difficulty in defining the role and function of the school psychologist was noted due to the inconsistent use of terminology. …

Stability Of Wisc-R Intelligence Scores: Implications For 3-Year Reevaluations Of Learning Disabled Students, Susan Pagel Oakman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined the stability of the WISC-R Verbal, Performance, and Full Scale IQ scores as well as subtest scores for a sample of learning disabled students over a 3-year interval. Additionally, this study also explored the relationship of stability of WISC-R IQ scores with severity of learning disability, as defined by type of educational placement (resource room, self-contained class with integration, or self-contained class with no integration). The subjects for this study were 150 learning disabled students, 111 males and 39 females, selected from two Area Education Agencies located in Iowa. Of these 150 students, 97 were placed in …

Parental Perceptions Of The Availability And Usefulness Of Nine School Psychological Roles, Lisa Ellen Ball Jan 1985

Parental Perceptions Of The Availability And Usefulness Of Nine School Psychological Roles, Lisa Ellen Ball

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study surveyed parental perceptions of the role of the school psychologist. In particular, it sought to determine which roles were perceived as available, which roles were perceived as useful, and which populations of children parents perceived school psychologists as being most effective in helping. Ninety-five parents of elementary school age children from an Iowa community of 30,000 responded to a questionnaire developed for the study. Results were processed by the university computer. An item profile analysis which generated a frequency count and percentages for all items was conducted. Results indicated that parents tended to view school psychologists as …

The Sex Variable And Reactions To A Peer With An Orthopedic Disability By First- And Second Graders, Virginia Lynn Ruark Jan 1985

The Sex Variable And Reactions To A Peer With An Orthopedic Disability By First- And Second Graders, Virginia Lynn Ruark

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Prior research has indicated that people react differently to a person with a physical disability than to a person without a disability, and that these different reactions vary with age and sex. While paper-and-pencil measures of reactions to persons with a disability have questionable validity, actual face-to-face interaction studies have yielded inconsistent results on measures of interaction time, eye contact, physical distance, and impression formation. Moreover, few studies have been conducted in which children were used as subjects. The purpose of the present study was to assess the behaviors of first- and second-grade children when reacting to peers of the …

Preschoolers' Gender Assignment To An Androgynous Storybook Character, Mara C. Loeb Jan 1985

Preschoolers' Gender Assignment To An Androgynous Storybook Character, Mara C. Loeb

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Tests designed to identify sexual preference, and administered to 8th grade through college-age subjects, have revealed a strong male bias in the responses by both sexes. Perceived similarity to a character (identification) increases attention to, and memory of, sex stereotyped information. Thus, a preference for the male gender would increase the effectiveness of information for males but not for females, since identification is not possible. This study examined preschoolers' identification with an androgynous storybook character. Eighty three- and four-year-old boys and girls from randomly chosen preschools were read a storybook prepared for this study. The storybook controlled for three gender …

The Effects Of A Study Strategies Course On College Students' Academic Performance, Melanie L. Mccalley Jan 1985

The Effects Of A Study Strategies Course On College Students' Academic Performance, Melanie L. Mccalley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was undertaken to determine whether the completion of a study strategies course had an effect on college students' grade point averages and attrition rate. The 50 experimental subjects were freshmen students at the University of Northern Iowa enrolled (during the fall semester of 1985) in "Effective Study Strategies", a non-credit six-week course offered by the Office of Learning and Instruction. A comparison group of 50 freshmen students, also from fall semester, 1985, and who did not take the study strategies course, were matched to each of the 50 experimental students on the basis of gender, ACT composite scores, …
