Little is known about the skill and knowledge acquisition of nurses in the educator role. This investigation represents an attempt to design and validate a skill acquisition model for the nurse educator role. While nurse educators often have strong clinical backgrounds, they face a significant role transition as nurse educators. Dreyfus and Dreyfus provided a model for studying skill acquisition in several fields and Benner applied the model to clinical nursing. The purpose of this study was to determine what the effects of virtual clinical simulation instruction were on the learning outcomes of students in higher education medical-surgical nursing education courses. This study fills a gap in the literature by adding data to the body of knowledge related to the use of this strategy for practical application in the classroom. The use of high-fidelity manikin-based simulation has been studied in many healthcare education areas. However, the use of this education technology in the American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) course has not been well examined in the literature, despite this education program being one of the most widely taught standardized medical courses in the United States. This study examined high fidelity manikin-based simulation versus low-fidelity manikin-based simulation in the context of an actual ACLS course. Technological changes, interpersonal relationships, and scarce resources have created a complex environment for health professionals. Nurses, as the largest group of health care providers, are confronted with moral issues when dealing with managed care policies, end-of-life care and workplace or institutional issues. Moral issues are expressed as moral distress, which has been linked to decreased satisfaction, termination of employment and leaving the profession of nursing altogether. Moral distress, therefore, decreases the number of nurses and contributes to the critical nursing shortage.
