Reading Vs Screening: The Development Of Generation Alpha, Frances Gibson
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Child development is an important field of research as it allows us to understand what promotes the cognitive, emotional, physical, social, and educational growth that shapes the adults we become. Every generation grows and learns in a new environment that is constantly changing, and it is vital that we determine what factors benefit or deter our development. This is especially true for Generation Alpha, who are uniquely recognized for being true digital natives. Technology has been integrated into nearly all aspects of our society and has had numerous benefits in terms of convenience, social connection, and education. However, overindulgence of …

Hormonal cycles play an essential role in the development and maturation of young boys and girls into men and women. As teenagers enter their late teens and early twenties, their hormonal cycles are primarily responsible for functions related to fertility and hormone production. During this period of time, these men and women are often in their collegiate years. Overall, the college experience is enjoyable for many students, but it can also be a very stressful time due to a difficult class load and the students’ need to balance their academic, social, and personal lives. Recent studies have analyzed the effects …

All students deserve an equitable, and high-quality education. The best education should show students how to use their strengths and skills to their benefit, and help them grow in the areas they are weaker in. In terms of education for deaf and hard of hearing students, there are gaps that need to be addressed. Students who are deaf can experience isolation, poor academic outcomes, and decreased self-esteem. However, with access to …

Teaching Justice Through Literature: How Higher Education Informs Ethics And Identity, Kami Mittlestadt
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This thesis argues that literature is a valuable tool in examining issues of justice, and teaching ethics through literature is a way to build critical thinking skills and awareness of the world. In this thesis, I examine research and teaching methods that have already been studied and implemented in the teaching of ethics and justice in companionship with literature, and use these resources to propose my own syllabus for a community college class on Ethics in Reading. The syllabus is broken into 7 units: an overview of justice in literature, five specific justice issues (race, feminism, queer studies, eco-criticism, and …

Technological advances occur at a rapid pace and evolve unceasingly. This is exemplified by artificial intelligence (AI), technology that is able to analyze external data to perform tasks that are usually completed by humans. This technology, for better or worse, irrevocably changes how society functions and, most importantly, deeply affects the way humans live, act, and think. With the advent of Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT), a chatbot technology that provides human-like answers to any prompt, powerful AI technology lies at the fingertips of anyone who can access it. In this thesis, I argue that a fundamental property of being …

The Impact Of Self-Care On Nursing Faculty Burnout And Worklife, Jennifer J. Harrington
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Nursing faculty are relied upon to prepare the nursing workforce of the future. The stress and pressure felt by nursing faculty impacts their ability to practice self-care, and this threatens their ability to perform optimally. Lack of self-care can lead to diminished quality of life, and ultimately burnout. Feelings of burnout and decreased quality of life, which are precursors to faculty turnover, further perpetuates the nursing shortage. A Quality Improvement (QI) Pilot Initiative, with an evidence-based design methodology was implemented within one university’s nursing department, located in a western state, to address this problem. Using a pre-post survey design and …

Learning By Playing: A Curriculum Utilizing Improvisational Theater To Develop Prosocial Behavior Skills And Self-Efficacy In Young Adolescents, Lynn Lovett Barr
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Prosocial behavior requires competency in social-emotional skills including interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation. During the developmental stage of early adolescence, youth are learning these skills and are more likely to engage in prosocial behavior if they feel efficacious in them. However, most social-emotional learning programs focus on conceptual knowledge in these areas without providing sufficient opportunities for practice, which does not allow students to develop sufficient procedural knowledge and self-efficacy. Improvisational theater offers a solution to this problem; used in concert with social-emotional lessons, it provides practice scenarios and procedural learning opportunities. This project consists of a curriculum …

While the stigma for mental illnesses has greatly declined in the last decade, there is still a disconnect between individuals without neurological illnesses and those with neurological illnesses, especially those that cause individuals to lose contact with reality. The goal of this interdisciplinary paper is to create empathy for these individuals, specifically people with schizophrenia, Alzheimer disease, and post-traumatic amnesia. Through a collection of four stories told from the perspective of these unreliable narrators, I used fiction writing techniques from the field of cognitive literary studies such as gapping and defamiliarization to create more empathy in the reader. Mathematics In Motion: A Handbook Of Kinesthetic Teaching Strategies, Janie Brown Salazar
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Howard Gardner first proposed his theory of Multiple Intelligences and the bodily-kinesthetic intelligence in 1983. Unfortunately, almost three decades later, teacher programs still do not train teachers about Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence in depth; nor do they train teachers how to integrate Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence into daily learning procedures and classroom environment. Schools focus very little on other factors that contribute to how successful a person might be in life, throughout life. Incorporating bodily-kinesthetic strategies in teaching can positively influence children's learning experience. The following research project investigates the research on the bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic teaching strategies, teaching strategies linked to student achievement, …

The Use Of Web 2.0 Technologies To Support Continuing Medical Education, Steven M. Folstein
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Physicians in the U.S. often turn to medical specialty societies as a primary source of the continuing education credits they need to maintain licensure and certification. In recent years, these requirements have been increased. Many physicians prefer live educational activities, but the cost of producing these events is prohibitive given the reduction in funding available to many societies. In this project, the author addressed this problem by developing a handbook for use by medical society members serving as volunteer faculty for continuing medical education (CME) activities. This handbook outlines a number of online tools, making use of the interactive qualities …
