Daily structured physical education programming should be protected to support the achievement of goals set within an individual education plan (IEP) for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). To ensure this is a priority, parent satisfaction is necessary to prioritize a healthy partnership between home and school. The objective of this research study is to identify the level of parent/guardian satisfaction in school-based and community-based daily organized physical education provided for children with autism. The research will determine if parents/guardians are wholly satisfied with the programming provided by their child’s school, or if greater satisfaction is attained when parents outsource …

Teacher's Attitudes Towards Instruction Of Students With Disabilities In An Inclusive Setting, Beverly Nunes
Teacher's Attitudes Towards Instruction Of Students With Disabilities In An Inclusive Setting, Beverly Nunes
Master's Theses
According to some studies, there is a trend in inclusion of students with disabilities in general classroom. And the key element to deal with this special education issue is the general education teacher. The present research surveyed the variables that would predict teachers' attitudes towards inclusion of students with disabilities in inclusive settings. The variables include years of service, teachers' attendance to special education courses in their program preparation, differentiated instruction, and previous experience with inclusion. Eighty general education teachers from public schools in a very diverse area of Southwest Michigan, answered a survey with 31 questions involving the Scale …

Effects Of Illustrations On Retention And Visual Attention Using Authentic Textbooks, Loris P. Fagioli
Master's Theses
Problem
The purpose of this exploratory study was to validate a model of multimedia learning, incorporating learner-specific characteristics such as intelligence, memory, and measures of visual attention.
Method
The sample consisted of 62 Andrews University students (26 males, 36 females, and mean age 21.7). Data were gathered by means of standardized testing (RPM, WAIS- III) and eye-tracking. MLR was used to determine significant visual attention predictors for retention and SEM was used to test a hypothesized model of multimedia learning.
Results
Multiple Linear Regression was significant (p.05; GFI = .923; CFI = .986; RMSEA = .043; PGFI = .451) proving …
Eliciting Facial Expressions In Children With And Without Down Syndrome, Orietta Coz
Eliciting Facial Expressions In Children With And Without Down Syndrome, Orietta Coz
Master's Theses
This study investigated facial expressions of children between the ages of 10 and 15 years with Down Syndrome (experimental group) and compared them to typically developing children (control group). Elicitation of facial expressions was carried out through showings of video clips. Trained observers were used to code expressions of happiness, anger, and disgust from video recordings that were made of the children’s reactions while they watched the video clips.
I hypothesized that Down Syndrome children will not differ from typically developing children in the frequency of elicited happy expressions. However, I expected them to differ in the frequency of elicited …

Relationships Between The Four Temperament Types: Sanguine, Choleric, Phlegmatic, And Melancholic, And Leisure Time Physical Activities, Herbert W. Helm Jr
Master's Theses
Problem
The physical health of a person seems to be an important issue in today's society. It would seem reasonable to hypothesize that the temperament of an individual may be a predisposing factor toward or against participation on a regular exercise program. It was the purpose of this study to determine what relationship exists between a person's temperament type and the amount of leisure time physical activity he or she performs.
Method
One-hundred and ninety-three college students participated in this study. The "Temperament Inventory" was used to determine a person's score on each of the four temperament types. The "Minnesota …

Assessing Student Co-Curricular Needs And Interests Through An Objective Method, Peter J. Mccann
Assessing Student Co-Curricular Needs And Interests Through An Objective Method, Peter J. Mccann
Master's Theses
Problem
Previous research has shown that when potential dropouts are actively involved in the school program, the dropout rate is reduced. Co-curricular activities have been found to be the most effective method of getting potential dropouts involved. The problem has been that implementation of co-curricular activities has relied on the subjective value judgment of administrators. This project attempted to develop an objective method for assessing student co-curricular needs and interests.
Method
There were three phases to this project. The first phase was an extensive review of the literature in order to determine factual evidence. The second phase was the development …
Micro-Level Enrollment Projections: A Study Involving The Parish Of Hanover, Jamaica, E G. Marshalleck
Micro-Level Enrollment Projections: A Study Involving The Parish Of Hanover, Jamaica, E G. Marshalleck
Master's Theses
Problem
While global forecasts of pupil populations are vital to educational planning, projections at micro-level are even more pertinent to detailed planning. In Jamaica, the need for local level forecasts becomes particularly apparent every September, when there is great pressure from would-be pupils on urban school accommodation.
Method
The review of literature was aimed at identifying projection methods feasible for micro-level applications. The following three methods, identified by Webster (1969) as about the most efficient of seventeen ratio and regression methods of pupil projection which he investigated, were selected for testing on data for the parish of Hanover, Jamaica: Transition …

An Analysis Of The Implementation Of The Nongraded Program At The New Port Richey Seventh-Day Adventist Elementary School, Erik S. Vetne
Master's Theses
Problem
Seventh-day Adventist schools have long been dissatisfied with the graded school as an answer to educational organization which would be in harmony with the writing of one of the founders of the church, Ellen G. White. Nongraded teaching seems to incorporate many of the ideas presented in her writings as a guideline for Seventh-day Adventist schools. It was the purpose of the present study to determine the attitudes of parents, students, and board members before and after implementation of a nongraded program.
Method
The parents and school board members completed the attitude questionnaires constructed by Gumper (1971, p. 253-257) …

A Multi-Sensory Approach To Teaching Spelling To Learning Disabled Children, Judith M. Meuleman
Master's Theses

Learning disabled children are receiving increasing attention, for despite an intelligence quotient within the normal range, they are not achieving in school as well as their peers. The reasons offered for this phenomenon seem to relate to perceptual problems. Specific learning disabilities occur in reading, arithmetic, spelling, handwriting and other motor coordination areas. This study investigates the effect of a multi-sensory method of teaching spelling to learning disabled children using sandpaper letters to utilize the tactile and kinesthetic sensory modalities.
Method
Unfamiliar spelling words were taught to 40 learning disabled children, 38 boys and 2 girls. The children were …
A Comparative Study Of The Vocabulary Of Five Basal Reading Series, Judith O. Young
A Comparative Study Of The Vocabulary Of Five Basal Reading Series, Judith O. Young
Master's Theses
Introduction
Much emphasis is being placed on the teaching of reading today, and yet students are still needing remedial help. The author's interest in the vocabulary comparability of basal reading textbooks began when trying to place a remedial student into a corresponding level in another basal series—there was no way to know if the vocabulary levels corresponded.
Through professional discussions with others it was found that many had faced this same problem with two types of students: l) Those transferring to a new school from a school system using another basal series; and, 2) Those needing additional remedial help. This …

White".
