This Improvement Science Dissertation in Practice (ISDiP) evaluates the implementation of social and emotional learning (SEL) lessons to address SEL challenges for 9th grade students attending WC High School (pseudonym). WC High School is one of four comprehensive high schools in Eugene, Oregon. A networked improvement community (NIC) composed of district leadership, school administrators, and teachers used the “collaborative for academic, social, and emotional learning” (CASEL) framework to develop and provide lessons supporting SEL throughout the academic year. In educational circles and beyond, there is increased concern for young men who are deemed underperforming in schools. This concern has been persistent for years, and has led to many studies exploring the growing academic divide between young men and women. Few have endeavored to investigate this phenomenon by studying young men’s experiences. School-Based Transition Strategies: Student-Identified Factors That Lead To Their Success, Michael Roberts

With the current educational focus on preparing all students to be college- and career-ready when they graduate from high school, supporting students with a smooth transition to high school and a successful high school experience has never been more important. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of seven tenth-grade students as they described their transition from junior high school to high school. Data were collected through personal interviews with high school students from a small rural community in California.
