A review of the literature in study skills reveals a lack of consensus with regard to identifying common characteristics of successful treatment programs. Also, there is a serious lack of research involving community college students.;The subject population consisted of 390 students enrolled in a freshman orientation course during the Winter Quarter 1984 at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia. The skills were: (1) the detection, encoding, and retrieval of cues and (2) the generation of tentative problem formulations. Six videotaped simulations of nurse-patient encounters were shown to a group of experienced nurses, who were asked to write tentative problem formulations with relevant cues and summarizing assessments of the situations. Four factors were found to have a positive impact upon the development of the selective image of the College. (1) The restoration and growth of Colonial …

The Use And Effect Of Puppetry And Bibliotherapy In Group Counseling With Children Of Divorced Parents, Kenneth Paul Bunting

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

For many years, the technique of puppetry has been successfully utilized within child counseling programs (Jenkins and Beckh, 1942) (Grant, 1950) (Koenig, 1951) (Dinkmeyer and Caldwell, 1970). Only recently the use of puppets was popularized by the introduction of the DUSO program (Dinkmeyer 1970, 1973). In fact, puppetry was cited as a potentially invaluable intervention strategy to facilitate affective educational programs to help stimulate young children to explore their feelings. However, little experimental evidence was gleaned from the literature to support the efficacy of the puppetry techniques (Strage, 1979) (Zingle, 1972) (Buffalo Public School System Project, 1975). Only testimonial and …

Making Routine Curriculum Changes At The College Of William And Mary In Virginia: Are Faculty Influenced By Trends In Students' Pursuits?, Anne M. Pratt

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In a study published in 1978, Manns and March found that university curricula do change in response to financial adversity. Based on a model proposed by Cohen and March, Manns and March said that it was necessary for departments to stimulate demand for enrollment in order to secure resources. They proposed that competition for resources would encourage competition among departments. Departments most in need of maintaining demand would change most; those least in need of maintaining demand would change least.;Manns and March also noted that academia has traditions about change that could have influenced the process. Thus, there may have …

Ut Prosim, The Balance Of Liberal And Useful Education In The American Land-Grant University: A Case Study Of Virginia Tech, Deborah M. Dicroce

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Land-grant universities provide an important structure for an accommodation of liberal and useful education. However, even within this structure, the relationship between useful and liberal is subject to changing balance. This study examines the relation by tracing the evolution of the agricultural and mechanical arts at a significant land-grant case--Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. From the perspectives of curriculum, instruction, and faculty, the study tests the hypothesis that Cheit's "model" for the evolution of "new profession" schools as peripheral satellites first turned full citizens second identifies Virginia Tech's evolving relationship of liberal and useful, particularly in agriculture and engineering. …
