The present study was undertaken to determine if a specific nonverbal reinforcing stimulus was more effective than a specific verbal reinforcing stimulus in bringing about a change in behavior in a verbal conditioning experiment.

As a preliminary investigation of delay factors in discrimination learning, the present study was designed primarily to contrast the effect of a short delay in response with the same duration of delay of reinforcement in order to evaluate the possibility that reinforcement-delay alone during the standard response-delay experiment is responsible for decremental effects.
