The amount of light needed to produce the most efficient work is still subject to controversy. An adequate amount is recommended by everyone, but the definition of adequate varies as is evidenced in the amount of foot-candles suggested. But the emphasis now has shifted from "how much light should we have" to "how well can we see." Quantity and quality may now be regarded as the twin requirements for good lighting.
