It was the purpose of this study to analyze the effect that three backgrounds had on the silent reading achievement test results of sixth grade students. No music, soothing instrumental music, and stimulating instrumental music were used.

Because the administration of the Lincoln Unified School District, Stockton, California, felt a need to challenge all children, especially those at the lower and upper end of the scale of intelligence, a search was made for a more effective means of teaching reading. The organizational plan used in Joplin, Missouri, was reviewed and was tried in some of the district's schools during the school year of 1959-60.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the reading group placement of children in grades one, two, and three of the Lodi Elementary School District for the 1956-1957 school year to determine if there is a difference in the success of boys and girls of the same chronological age in favor of the girls insofar as placement in a reading group is concerned. The variables were placement in a reading group, sex, chronological age, and grade level. Examination of the data collected was made to determine if younger children are as successful in reading attainment as their older classmates.

The purpose of this study was to discover if there is a relationship between reading loss and visual disability and to assay the reading losso that is characteristic for individuals with a visual disability. The intent was not to diagnose that all reading loss can be attributed to a visual disability or define visual defects, for the latter requires a careful examination by an eye specialist, but rather to determine if the child’s reading may be affected by a blurred visual image or by eye-muscle fatigue.

Two major aspects of the study were: (1) Will upper-primary children more easily learn to spell words which have previously appeared in their developmental reading program? (2) Will they retain the spelling or those words longer than other words of similar spelling difficulty?

It was assumed the interests at this level, the type of creative writing or paraphrasing the story of the reading text, repetitious language arts activities, and research in reading could be developed so that all the children would achieve by using one basic reading text.
