An Investigation Of The Effects Of Compressed Heuristics Instruction On Problem Solving In Mathematics, James Murray Dunlop Jan 1988

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Compressed Heuristics Instruction On Problem Solving In Mathematics, James Murray Dunlop

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect that heuristics instruction for certain strategies and skills used in the solution of non-routine mathematical problems would have on problem solving behavior. It was conjectured that subjects given compressed but explicit instruction in problem solving strategies would exhibit higher achievement than subjects who did not receive such explicit instruction. Subjects were elementary education student volunteers from the University of North Florida. They were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups for instruction. A pretest and a posttest were administered to collect the data to evaluate this experimental design. The null …

Effects Of Journal Writing On Thinking Skills Of High School Geometry Students, Mary Mcmahon Linn Jan 1987

Effects Of Journal Writing On Thinking Skills Of High School Geometry Students, Mary Mcmahon Linn

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the project was to determine the effects of journal writing on the thinking skills of high school geometry students. The research supports the idea that writing can enhance a student's metacognitive ability. The results show that the journals served effectively in various capacities. Each student became actively involved in his or her own learning process. Writing forced the students to synthesize information and they became aware of what they did and did not know. They recognized their individual learning style and strengths and began to take advantage of those strengths. The journals served as a diagnostic tool …

Effects Of Standardized Achievement Tests On Mathematics Education, Patricia P. Jurgens Jan 1987

Effects Of Standardized Achievement Tests On Mathematics Education, Patricia P. Jurgens

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research project deals with the effects of standardized achievement tests on elementary-school mathematics. It contains a review of current literature dealing with the decline in mathematics achievement, mathematics assessment, concept development, and the effects of standardized testing. A survey was conducted in seven elementary schools throughout Clay County, Florida. The purpose of the survey was to assess teachers' perceptions of how preparation for the major annual standardized achievement test affects the pacing, sequence, and presentation of their mathematics curricula. Eighty-six teachers from grades one, three, and five completed a limited response questionnaire. The results indicate that a majority of …

A Comparison Of Computational Error Patterns For Grades 3, 5 And 8, Catherine C. Wallace Jan 1984

A Comparison Of Computational Error Patterns For Grades 3, 5 And 8, Catherine C. Wallace

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

One hundred forty students in grades 3, 5 and 8 were tested to compare error patterns for whole number addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Results showed that error patterns do persist from grade to grade. The most prevalent errors were: lack of mastery of basic addition and multiplication facts; failure to understand place value and numeration; and confusion with subtraction and regrouping. The study concluded that because error patterns endure, teachers must be prepared to identify and remediate, as well as prevent errors through informed methods. Future studies should focus on error patterns in other grades and the effect of …
