A Handbook For Esl Teacher Training At Okinawa Christian School, Dan Jerome
A Handbook For Esl Teacher Training At Okinawa Christian School, Dan Jerome
MA TESOL Collection
The handbook has been designed for use as the text in a two or three day teacher-training course as well as a reference book of information useful throughout the academic year of the school. Because many of the ESL teachers at the school are inexperienced and/or untrained in the field, the information and suggestions have been written in non-technical language using a question/answer style that attempts to deal with the practical issues with which new teachers are most concerned. More than a “how-to” book, however, the handbook suggests matters of philosophical importance that will help teachers see beyond the immediate …

Teaching Esl Literacy To The Functionally Illiterate Adult: Using Language Experience And Words In Color, Kimberly Gerould
MA TESOL Collection
This thesis attempts to arrive at a personal approach to teaching reading in English as a second language to functionally illiterate adults in a multilingual ESL classroom. There is a brief review of some of the research on teaching reading and on the reading process, as well as a review of the major teaching reading methodologies. Two approaches to teaching reading, the Language Experience Approach and Words in Color, are then focused on. The author suggests ways in which these two approaches can be adapted to the adult ESL classroom and integrated with other approaches. Finally, a series of concrete …

In the second and third sections two approaches to ESL/EFL homework, traditional and non-traditional, are examined through the presentation and discussion of their constituent parts. An Approach For Teaching The Illiterate Esl Student How To Read And Write, Mary Sween
An Approach For Teaching The Illiterate Esl Student How To Read And Write, Mary Sween
MA TESOL Collection
Although much work has previously been done on teaching the illiterate, I feel that much of it is quite rhetorical, theorical, and not complete or easy to follow. This paper dwells on a very practical approach to teaching the illiterate how to read and write, much of which I have devised, used, and tested its validity.
I have proceeded from assuming the student is at point zero and built his ability to read and write through the use of specific activities appropriate to his level of competency.
This is an easy to follow and complete guide to teaching reading and …

Composing And Using Poetry As An Esl Teaching Tool, Roland Caissie
Composing And Using Poetry As An Esl Teaching Tool, Roland Caissie
MA TESOL Collection
It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate how poetry can be a valuable tool in the ESL classroom, the problems connected with relying on extant verse for work with ESL students, and the consequential preferability of producing one's own poetry. In addition, guidelines and suggestions are offered for creating original and goal-specific works, together with ways in which those works, once made, may be used most effectively in the ESL classroom. Also, sample works, by the author and others, as well as various exercises and a brief bibliography, are provided in an appendix, giving the reader a source …

Native speakers of English rely on more than just words and grammatical structures to communicate their feelings, attitudes and intentions. In fact, it is often not the words and the grammar that convey the speaker's message. Rather, it is the speaker's intonation pattern, body language and voice volume that get the message across. It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate the importance of including in the ESL classroom a study of intonation patterns used in everyday spoken English. It is also the purpose of this paper to suggest materials and methods which could be used in the classroom …

The adult ESL student who is illiterate or functionally illiterate in his native language has particular difficulty when learning to read English. Included in the paper are the general guidelines followed, specific steps taken to meet the requirements of each guideline, and a discussion of each level of materials developed. Examples of all four levels are included. Particular emphasis …

Since Teaching English as a Second Language is a profession involved with the humanity of all nations and cultures, as ESL teachers, we can play an integral part in the inevitable process of the world growing smaller and nations growing more and more interdependent.

Part two consists of a series of questions that grew out of real teaching situations, and that might provide a springboard for examining our values …

Visual English: A Method Of Language Education For The Deaf, Adapted For The Esl Classroom, Dennis Sayers
MA TESOL Collection
This report details an adaptation for the ESL classroom of the Fitzergerald Key, a method of language education for the deaf which utilizes question words to organize vocabulary development and to visualize the regularities of word order in English. The modified Key is a visual means of silent communication shared between teacher and students which utilizes a board and three kinds of manipulatives: squares marked with question words to indicate the 8 slots of an English transitive sentence; cubes which give common modulators of meaning and frequent pro-forms; and vocabulary cards. The methodology used is "commanding verbalizations", i.e, commands with …

This paper examines the considerations - linguistic, cultural, and developmental - which should be considered in the design and implementation of an ESL program appropriate to the settings of a bilingual-bicultural education program and to the needs of Navajo children. The process of language development in both first and second language learning is related to the design of learning activities and sequencing of language objectives. Observations of learning styles and language usage as provided by the culture, the individual, and by his peers as they relate to the development of a bilingual Navajo child are examined. The paper discusses the …
A Critique Of Language Learning And Theory In The Audio-Lingual Method Of Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Stephen Gregory Hanchey
A Critique Of Language Learning And Theory In The Audio-Lingual Method Of Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Stephen Gregory Hanchey
MA TESOL Collection
In this paper I investigate the claims on which many present ESL methods are based and examine them in view of recent developments in both learning theory and linguistics. There are reasons to think that the audio-lingual method is grounded in inadequate theories of learning and linguistics; if so, this warrants experiments in new methods and re-examination of such currently acceptable teaching methods as repetition, imitation, and pattern practice. In particular, I examine the practices of the audiolingual method which are based on behaviorist and structural linguistic theories, especially those practices which are extensions of theories about child language acquisition, …
