Understanding Secondary Students' Reading And Writing Records: A Study Of Curricula In Literacy Achievement, Kathleen M. Kinney
Theses and Graduate Projects
In accordance with the new federally mandated No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, states, districts, schools, and educators must set and implement a plan that ensures all students are academically proficient in the areas of reading, math and science by the year 2014. According to The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), the "national average reading scores of 4th and 8th graders have varied little over time, though both were 2 points higher in 2005 than in 1992. However, the scores of 12th graders declined 6 points during this period" (Livingston, 2007, p.6). As part of this research, I …
Participation In Extra-Curricular Activities By Suburban High School Students With Emotional Behavior Disorders, Karin Dye
Theses and Graduate Projects
This study analyzes the current status of the involvement of suburban high school students with Emotional/Behavior Disorders (EBD) and their participation in extra curricular activities. Individuals who participate in extra-curricular activities are positively associated with a reduction in delinquent behaviors and show an increase in both academic and social performance. Results of studies with high school students across the United States have demonstrated that those students who become heavily involved in extra curricular activities tend to be model students and seldom get involved in delinquency and crime (Cassel, 2000). Students who are diagnosed with EBD, however, are more likely than …
Immigrant Students And The College Classroom Climate In Higher Education, Becky Appley Boesch
Immigrant Students And The College Classroom Climate In Higher Education, Becky Appley Boesch
Dissertations and Theses
In recent years, the immigrant population in the U.S. has increased dramatically. This increase has caused educational institutions to try to understand this population and their needs in order to aid in their academic success. While this awareness has surfaced in K-12 education, higher education continues, partly because of a lack of research on these students, to render these students and their needs insignificant. While this paper cannot begin to explore all the questions needed to be answered in terms of this population, it can provide an initial glimpse into one important aspect of education for the immigrant, the university …

The Relationship Between Rural Middle School Student Mathematics Achievement And Classroom Sense Of Community, John E. Donlan
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
This study addressed the need for more information about academic growth and achievement in mathematics, and how it relates to sense of community in middle school settings. This was accomplished by applying the Classroom and School Community Inventory (CSCI) construct (Rovai, Wighting, & Lucking, 2004) to all three middle schools in one rural county. The CSCI was utilized to measure sense of community in mathematics classes to determine if differences existed between grades six, seven, and eight, including gender subgroups, among the three middle schools in the same rural county. This study examined academic growth in the subject of mathematics …

Teacher Perceptions Of Their Effectiveness In Supporting Reading Strategies As A Result Of Collaboration With A Literacy Coach, Sharon S. Miller
Dissertations
Problem
The poor reading and comprehension skills of many secondary-school students present a challenge for secondary teachers, the majority of whom have no training in the teaching of reading. The increasing expectations of the No Child Left Behind legislature add to the pressures on public educators. Is coaching an effective way to support and encourage secondary content-area teachers to include reading strategies in their daily work with students?
Purpose
The purpose of the study was to examine the literacy coach initiative in two small junior-senior high schools. A further purpose was to closely study the coach and two of the …
