Before any proper study may be made of Swift's attitude toward women, as exemplified in his life and as expressed in his writings, it would seem advisable to review briefly woman's place in society during the period of Swift's mature life. Certainly no just conclusions could be reached regarding the problem of Swift and women unless the study were predicated on an awareness of the position of women in the economic, educational and social life of, roughly, the first half of the eighteenth century.
