Shakamohtaa: Connecting And Coming Together To Support International Student Career Readiness, Sabreena Macelheron
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Abstract
In the evolving Canadian landscape, permanent residency acquisition has undergone a transformative shift from land sales to educational credential procurement. Canadian higher education markets post-secondary qualifications to international students (IS) seeking migration routes, posing nuanced challenges. IS, despite holding higher education credentials, often find themselves relegated to non-field specific jobs due to existing disparities in the Canadian job market. Amid this equation, IS grapple with the essential need for pre-and-post graduate career experiences to fulfill eligibility criteria for permanent residency application. This pursuit extends beyond merely aligning with their credentials, requiring conformity to approved national occupation codes aligned with …
Indigenization Of Postsecondary Education Applied Learning Curriculum Development, Gabriel Y. Chung
Indigenization Of Postsecondary Education Applied Learning Curriculum Development, Gabriel Y. Chung
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (2015) Calls to Action have awoken Canadian society to the reconciliation. Although there is a growing body of knowledge on the individual topics of Indigenous education, knowledge, and leadership, there is relatively little research bringing together these topics in curriculum development practices in a postsecondary education skilled learning context. My problem of practice (PoP) is one that strives to address a low enrolment of Indigenous adult learners and lower positive outcomes from skilled training programs. Situating this problem from my perspectives as a Canadian-born visible minority Settler on Turtle Island and postsecondary education …

The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Student engagement within District X is at an all-time low. As District X strives for more equitable learning opportunities, they also work to serve the unique and varying needs of students despite the rising physical and mental health concerns, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic that shook students and adults alike, resulting in a global collective trauma and led to the shutdown of schools worldwide in March 2020. These issues are especially prevalent within our most underfunded and underserved populations, such as Indigenous populations. As Canadians, Indigenous relations and calls to adopt Indigenous ways of knowing and being …
Transformational Leadership Approach For Encouraging Historically Marginalized Communities To Access Admission To Naturopathic Medicine, Baljit Khamba
Transformational Leadership Approach For Encouraging Historically Marginalized Communities To Access Admission To Naturopathic Medicine, Baljit Khamba
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Many healthcare training institutions lack cultural diversity, including naturopathic medicine. One potential reason is a lack of historically marginalized individuals applying to these medical schools. Attracting communities of colour to healthcare professions, like naturopathic medicine is important for improving healthcare access and delivery across all individuals within North America. This OIP explores the lack of diversity in applicants to the naturopathic medical program at a large multi-centre institution. The role that education and mentorship of faculty members can play to improve implicit biases and eventually encourage historically marginalized individuals to apply to the program is explored. Moreover, the OIP presents …

Enhancing Academic Preparedness Of International Students Coming To X University For Post-Secondary Education, Gurneet Singh Anand
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
International students comprise an increasing demographic on Canadian campuses and represent increasing diversity in the higher education sector. Student transitions to higher education relate to concepts of equity and inclusivity with respect to these institutions providing the best chances for all students to succeed. Similar to other higher education institutions in Canada, X University is in the unique and somewhat difficult position of navigating the effects of globalization. As X University has seen steady influxes of international students, the faculty, staff and domestic students are realizing that the international students themselves have been facing integration difficulties within the university and …

We Are More Than Baskets, Beads, And Bannock: Expanding Teachers’ Knowledge Through Indigenous Professional Development And In-Service Training, Corinne Chappell
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) explores Megwe'g School Board's (MSB, pseudonym) ongoing challenge to integrate Indigenous education into classrooms. The underlying cause is the need for Indigenous professional development and in-service learning opportunities for teachers to teach Indigenous education. Indigenous cultural teachings are embedded within the province's curriculum but are seldom taught as directed by the provincial curriculum guide. Three proposed solutions to the Problem of Practice will be examined. The Appreciative Inquiry change model was utilized as the framework for leading change for the selected proposed solution. Critical Indigenous Theory (CIT) was chosen for the Organizational Improvement Plan. CIT …
Admission Policy Review: Strengthening Indigenous In-Community Training Programs, Rennais C. Gayle
Admission Policy Review: Strengthening Indigenous In-Community Training Programs, Rennais C. Gayle
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Canada’s colonial past significantly impacts prospective Indigenous student postsecondary enrollment. For the past fifty years, postsecondary institutions have focused on assimilation and cultural renewal. One assumption is Indigenous learners share similar educational experiences including ease and access to westernized high school programs with a credit or term system and ease and access to transcripts and criminal records checks often required for postsecondary admission. This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) addresses the Problem of Practice (PoP) in admission procedures that do not consider Indigenous knowledges, experiences, and criteria for entry into postsecondary programming in SMH Department at LAC College. As an academic …
Building A Culture Of Relevancy And Decolonization In A Community School, Minou Morley
Building A Culture Of Relevancy And Decolonization In A Community School, Minou Morley
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
This Organizational Improvement Plan is based on a problem of practice at an inner-city school in a medium-sized Ontario city. There is an achievement/opportunity gap between minoritized students and those in the majority, that run along the Regular English/Specialized Program and Early French Immersion Program lines. Minoritized students are overrepresented in the former two programs. When viewed through a decolonizing lens, built on a framework of culturally relevant and responsive leadership, and informed by Indigenous theoretical frameworks it is a problem of social justice and equity. Using Shields conception of transformative leadership, the problem is examined through an asset-based approach …
Leading Edi Department Level Change, Tannisha L. Lambert
Leading Edi Department Level Change, Tannisha L. Lambert
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Higher education leaders face challenging times amidst persistent calls for actions to address discrimination and bias on their campuses. Critics point to the imbalance of women and racialized persons in faculty positions as evidence of structured inequalities. Increased scrutiny and research into this disparity reveals that there are institutional barriers and structured norms that maintain a status quo, which centralizes some experiences and disregards others. This disparity extends to students and affects their experiences, participation and performance in classrooms. Evidence of inequality on higher education campuses contradicts the established goals and values of these organizations and presents a challenge for …

Challenging Anti-Black Racism: To Improve The Efficacy And Success Of Black Administrators. Organization Improvement Plan, Rohan N. Hollingsworth
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
The success of Black students has been at the forefront of discussion and planning in many school boards. As a result, we have seen many solutions and proposed solutions addressing anti-Black racism. Some of these solutions included de-streaming courses, revisions on how Black students were suspended, and the inclusion of culturally relevant pedagogy and critical race theory in the curriculum, to name a few. These institutionally proposed solutions are all great and even add value to the educational experience of Black students.
Although these strategies greatly enhance students’ experience, they fail to challenge the status quo of society. These strategies …
Steps Toward Healing A Colonial System While Improving Equitable Experiences For Indigenous Learners K-12 In A Bc Rural School District, Gail Higginbottom
Steps Toward Healing A Colonial System While Improving Equitable Experiences For Indigenous Learners K-12 In A Bc Rural School District, Gail Higginbottom
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
The Canadian K–12 education system is built on the policy and practices of genocide at Indian residential schools and on ongoing Indigenous-specific racism. With a history of assimilation, it is imperative to address settler colonialism in education today. Through the agency of a Secwépemc district principal, Secwépemc ways of knowing and being, decolonial leadership, and critical and transformative theories emerge as tools for a fraught education system. As a problem of practice, the tension between Indigenous student success and systemic understandings of Indigenous ways of knowing highlights the imperative to address colonial system conditions while improving equitable experiences of Indigenous …

Fifty years ago, Together Today for Our Children Tomorrow (1973) stated that Tawaw Education (pseudonym) has been failing to meet the academic needs of First Nations students from K-12. This ongoing issue is highlighted by both the Office of the Auditor General’s Reports (2009; 2019) and Yee’s (2021) Review of Inclusive and Special Education Report. This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) addresses the ongoing education issues First Nations people have endured for many years and provides guidance to support improved educator efficacy throughout the system. An Indigenous leadership approach is used to ensure authenticity to this work, highlighting the importance …

Learning Journey Towards Reconciliation: Developing Teacher Self-Efficacy, Birgitte Biorn
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Current changes in curriculum and provincial teaching standards are intended to address the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Teachers are responsible for implementing the changes but do not yet have the knowledge or skills to effectively manage the transformative changes being suggested. This organizational improvement plan (OIP) aims to address the problem of practice associated with teacher efficacy to incorporate Indigenous-Informed pedagogy (IIP) using the collaborative model of professional learning communities (PLC). The triadic determination of beliefs, skills, and environment of social cognitive theory by Albert Bandura is highlighted as a necessary structure to ensure that …

The Amplification Of “At-Promise” Middle School Student Voice To Foster School Success, Nathan J. Ngieng
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Transformative actions towards the collective vision of the educated citizen have been central to the change efforts of educational leaders in British Columbia. Through a challenge to the status quo, utilizing a critical and post-structuralist lens, this paper charts a path towards revisioning middle school student success nested in listening stances and reflective practices. At the heart of this Problem of Practice is the disengagement and lack of voice that middle school students are experiencing, viewed through the context of a large and diverse suburban school district in the lower mainland of British Columbia. Theories of social learning, adult learning, …
Defining Student Success From A Holistic Perspective, Ranabelle Aranda Stroh
Defining Student Success From A Holistic Perspective, Ranabelle Aranda Stroh
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Scholarly literature on higher education presents a plethora of student success definitions. These definitions encompass both quantitative and qualitative data as measurements. However, inconsistent definitions of student success have negatively impacted students’ experiences in higher education. This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) addresses the Problem of Practice (PoP): the need to bring awareness to the inconsistent definitions of student success and the negative impacts on student experiences at Oasis College. I explore the organizational context at Oasis College and propose a strategy as a response to the PoP, including the contributing factors. Utilizing the Kahkisiw model as the change vision sets …

Embracing Diversity To Increase Belongingness And Foster A Culture Of Success, Julia M. Soloman
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
The importance of social relationships and belonging (a fundamental human need that must be satisfied to enable positive relationship-building skills and physical and mental wellness) have been studied for decades. Research shows a strong sense of belongingness for students can positively impact their academic performance. Belongingness, or a connection to school, peers, and teachers, is strongly indicative of improved performance for historically marginalized, racially and culturally diverse students. St. Kizito school (pseudonym), an elementary school in a large urban center in Alberta, has a diverse demographic of students including many first-generation Canadians, new Canadians, and refugee students. School-based data shows …

A Shift Towards Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices In Workplace Education, Nancy M. Thompson
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) focuses on a nonprofit organization resolving a problem of practice (PoP) that was identified following the withdrawal of its funder’s support. The problem is an absence of culturally responsive teaching practices (CRTP) in the pedagogy knowledge of subject matter experts (SMEs) who are hired to instruct capacity-building programs within community partner organizations. These organizations are working to instil a culture of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization. This OIP unpacks this PoP and creates a pathway forward to implement a change initiative based on a triad model solution: policy, beliefs, and practice. This multifaceted approach results …
Improving Clinician Wellbeing In Mental Health Care, Michael T. Keough
Improving Clinician Wellbeing In Mental Health Care, Michael T. Keough
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Mental health issues among children and youth have steadily been on the rise in Canada. One of the ways that the Provincial Government of British Columbia addresses this issue is by employing mental health clinicians (MHCs) on various community mental health teams across the province. It is well established in the literature that community MHCs experience considerably high levels of occupational stress (OS) in their therapeutic roles (O’Connor et al., 2018). Chronic exposure to OS makes MHCs vulnerable to the compassion fatigue and burnout, which are considered occupational hazards (OHs) of mental health care (Bride et al., 2007; O’Connor et …

This Organizational Improvement Plan is an effort to address the lack of digital literacy learning at a Kuwaiti higher education institution. Digital literacy, and by extension, digital citizenship are critical skills to have in today’s world. Global College of Kuwait (GCK, anonymized) is a relatively new college in the region that is struggling to retain students, particularly after COVID highlighted the college’s lack of experience/preparedness with digital literacy. To tackle the problem, a reform committee was formed and tasked with finding a feasible solution to improve digital literacy learning in the college’s Foundation Program. A Foundation Program is a preparatory …
Systemic Abuse Of Black Educational Leaders In K-12 Schools, Bianca Parris
Systemic Abuse Of Black Educational Leaders In K-12 Schools, Bianca Parris
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Anti-Black racism (ABR) is race-based discrimination experienced by Black educational leaders in the Ontario education system. Since the police officers murdered George Floyd, it has ignited the global Black Lives Matters movement. This has translated into K-12 Ontario schools with a more pronounced emphasis on addressing ABR and systemic racism to provide an environment that is rooted in equity. Despite this global action and ministry requirement, ABR continues to prevail and affects Black educational leaders’ ability to lead effectively. Black educational leaders are navigating a system that is unjust and rooted in colonialism which puts them at a disadvantage. Critical …
Achieving Equitable Support For Adjunct Faculty Using Upside-Down Change, Katherine Ann Andrushenko
Achieving Equitable Support For Adjunct Faculty Using Upside-Down Change, Katherine Ann Andrushenko
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Lifelong learning equips members of society to face their greatest challenges, which is the moral purpose of higher education. Online continuing education (OCE) serves this purpose well. In recent years enrollments for OCE have outpaced enrollments for more traditional education and the number of adjunct faculty facilitating OCE continues to rise. However, these adjunct faculty do not enjoy the comfortable respectability afforded to faculty facilitating full-time education. The organizational culture in higher education institutions (HEIs) is bifurcated between continuing and full-time education, with OCE assumed to be a poor substitute for full-time education. Consequently, adjunct faculty receive inadequate and inequitable …

This inquiry draws upon a variety of theoretical perspectives and leadership approaches, including critical and queer theories, and the transformative leadership approach, for the purposes of identifying an appropriate solution to creating inclusive and identity affirming learning environments for sexually diverse students. This inquiry provides insight that will help to further understand the experiences of sexually diverse students in the education system, while exploring strategies for creating learning environments that affords these students value, dignity, and respect. It is proposed that a transformative leadership approach, as it is grounded in social justice efforts, may serve to stimulate the conversation amongst …
Etuaptmumk: The Indigenous Principle Of Two-Eyed Seeing As A Remedy For Administrator Resistance In Developing Sovereignty-Affirming Equity Leadership Competencies, Bobbie Jo Lovell
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
School leadership is a critical factor in disrupting systemic oppression and ensuring the achievement and well-being of all students. In Ontario, school administrators are charged with setting an equity agenda to foster safe and equitable learning conditions for all students. This PoP seeks to improve administrators’ mindsets on leading equitable schools, and this organizational improvement plan (OIP) leverages the principles of two-eyed seeing (2ES) to braid together the servant, appreciative, and transformative leadership styles which, stronger together, support sustainable solutions for change. A braided integrated approach of the medicine wheel, the Knoster model for managing complex change, and the appreciative …

Are Diamonds A Girl’S Best Friend? Working Toward A Support System For Sexual Misconduct In Baseball, Alexis Krystyna Brudnicki
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Anyone who experiences and wishes to report sexual misconduct should be supported and have resources available to them. The problem of practice addressed in this organizational improvement plan is the deficit of structures and supports for reporting sexual misconduct at Baseball X (a pseudonym), resulting in ineffective and inefficient reporting and investigatory processes. This plan is focused on analyzing Baseball X through multiple lenses and frameworks to identify potential solutions to this problem. To resolve this issue, the best solution is to embed strategic and intentional support systems into the organization and its culture. The theories of power, systems, and …

The Ripple Effect: How One Rural School Can Embrace Indigenous Learning On A Journey Towards Truth And Reconciliation, Catherine A. Usher
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
In a K–9 rural school in Alberta, the lack of opportunities for land-based learning and understanding of Indigenous truths, histories, and ways of knowing creates a significant gap in knowledge that is an ethical obligation to address. For the school to engage in social justice and transformation to address this problem of practice, it is crucial to address this gap and work towards decolonization and indigenization. The goal of this Organizational Improvement Plan is to ensure that staff gain a deep awareness and understanding of the historical oppression and marginalization of Indigenous peoples in Canada due to colonization, both historically …
Faith & Learning Integration: Building Teacher Efficacy & Leader Capacity To Sustain The Christian Worldview, Ian W. Mighty
Faith & Learning Integration: Building Teacher Efficacy & Leader Capacity To Sustain The Christian Worldview, Ian W. Mighty
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Coherence needs to be achieved in how teachers in K-12 Schools approach the integration of faith and learning. To achieve coherence, Christian schools must enable students to reflect critically on how their faith is connected to their learning and prepare them to live godly lives in God's world. Teachers at Prairie Christian School display low efficacy for faith and learning integration when they baptize their lessons with prayer and reference scriptural passages, hoping their students will catch faith messages. Failing to dynamically and intentionally integrate faith and learning distorts the Christian worldview of students, evidenced by several research studies, school …

Creating Equity Education For First Nation, Métis And Inuit Students In Ontario Provincial Classrooms, Tammy Restoule Desormeaux
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
There is an education gap in the achievement of Indigenous students today linked to the colonial domination era. Due to inequities in provincial education systems, Indigenous students have not been performing and succeeding academically like non-Indigenous students. Since 2015, strategies and solutions have emerged to correct this ongoing Canadian issue. 94 Calls to Action by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) were posted to help repair the harm caused by residential schools and move forward with reconciliation. This Organizational Plan (OIP) will focus on École secondaire catholique Entourage (ESCEntourage) (a pseudonym) to improve instruction for Indigenous students' academic, …

Leading For Truth And Reconciliation: Parent, Family And Community Empowerment In The Learning Of Their Children, Shendah M. Benoit
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Almost ten years after the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, there remains much for schools to improve for First Nation, Metis, and Inuit students and their families. Focusing on Call to Action 10.vi: enabling parents to fully participate in the learning of their children, identifies a problem of practice. The impact of residential schools and systemic racism have created a separation between families and their children’s learning as well as a lack of trust in the school. Using the assumptions of positive organizational scholarship to understand the complex system of my school, as well as …

Reimagining Community Engagement In A Jk–12 International Baccalaureate School: Transforming Praxis Through Compassionate Dialogic Processes, Paige A. Freeborn
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
The International Baccalaureate (IB) mandates community engagement (CE; otherwise known as service learning) throughout its continuum; however, there is confusion around epistemological approaches, strategies, and methodologies. This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) aims to support educators in developing a praxis-based CE program at an independent IB school in Western Canada. It is inspired by a problem of practice that exists at Hope Mountain School (HMS), where there is currently no coherent framework to guide CE development through ethical and sustainable approaches. Critical/post-critical theoretical approaches ground the OIP’s inquiry process supported by sociotransformative constructivist and ecocentric worldviews. Systemic tensions between HMS, IB …

Weaving The Story Of Self Into Transformative Leadership, Nicole R. Davey
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Indigenous students are not achieving the same levels of success as non-Indigenous students according to British Columbia (BC) Ministry of Education annual reports on academic achievement, secondary transitions, and sense of belonging. School-based leaders oversee implementation of the BC curriculum in their schools and can influence the mindset and practices of educators in their buildings; however, they need supports and structures to better understand how to address the opportunity and achievement gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) asserts that school-based leaders can disrupt oppressive behaviours in the K–12 education system through social justice practices. Transformative …
