Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) platforms are becoming increasingly popular in recent years. Online learners need to watch the whole course video on MOOC platforms to learn the underlying new knowledge, which is often tedious and time-consuming due to the lack of a quick overview of the covered knowledge and their structures. In this paper, we propose ConceptThread , a visual analytics approach to effectively show the concepts and the relations among them to facilitate effective online learning. Specifically, given that the majority of MOOC videos contain slides, we first leverage video processing and speech analysis techniques, including shot recognition, …

As the COVID-19 pandemic caused severe disruption to education enterprises throughout the world, the main response by educational institutions was to move to online learning environments. The purpose of this study was to understand better how instructors could improve online learning for a professional-level week-long short course in a highly technical area (data analytics), which had, pre-COVID, been a hands-on computer, laboratory-based learning experience. The authors used self-study of professional practice to elicit and understand the major issues and concerns of the transition to an online learning environment. Under the guidance of a colleague in teacher education, three course instructors …

In the Philippines, one challenge that continues to be faced by the Department of Education in bringing educational content in a blended learning modality is the lack of internet access of the learners. This paper discusses the distribution, through a community LTE network, of mathematical resources for Grades 7 to 10 to teachers and students of a particular high school in the Philippines. It also gives details on particular technological tools (mathematical applications) that were created to help the mathematical learning of students in a remote setting.

In summary, it is necessary to develop a diverse group of K-12 students’ interest and skills in cybersecurity as cyber threats continue to grow. Evidence shows that educating the next generation of cyber workers is a crucial job that should begin in elementary school. To ensure the effectiveness of cybersecurity education and equity at the K-12 level, teachers must create thoughtful plans for considering communities’ interests and needs, and to continually reconsider what’s working and how to adjust our strategies, approaches, design, and research plan to meet their specific needs, challenges, and strengths, particularly with students from under-served and underrepresented …

Using An Online Tutorial To Teach Rea Data Modeling In Accounting Information Systems Courses, Poh Sun Seow, Pan, Gary Feb 2017

Using An Online Tutorial To Teach Rea Data Modeling In Accounting Information Systems Courses, Poh Sun Seow, Pan, Gary

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Online learning has been gaining widespread adoption due to its successin enhancing student-learning outcomes and improving student t academicperformance. This paper describes an online tutorial to teach resource-event-agent(REA) data modeling in an undergraduate accounting information systems course. The REA online tutorial reflects a self-study application designed to helpstudents improve their understanding of the REA data model. As such, thetutorial acts as a supplement to lectures by reinforcing the concepts andincorporating practices to assess student understanding. Instructors can accessthe REA online tutorial at http://smu.asg/rea. An independent survey by the University’sCentre for Teaching Excellence found a significant increase in students’perceived knowledge of REA …

Preparing Teacher Candidates For Virtual Field Placements Via An Exposure To K-12 Online Teaching, Tian Luo, Laura Hibbard, Teresa Franklin, David R. Moore

STEMPS Faculty Publications

Aim/Purpose The goal of this project was to determine what effects exposure to online K-12 teaching and learning activities had on teacher candidates’ perceptions of K-12 online learning, how the exposure allowed teacher candidates to reach greater understanding of online pedagogy, and what effect such exposure had on teacher candidates’ aspirations to complete virtual field experiences.

Background With an increasing number of K-12 students learning online within full-time online schools and in blended learning environments, universities must prepare future educators to teach in virtual environments including clinical practice. Before engaging in online field placement, preservice teachers must be oriented to …

What Factors Impact On Primary Students Using The Internet And Media For Learning And Entertainment At Home?, Jiangyan Lu, Qiang Hao

Computer Science Faculty and Staff Publications

With the increasing affordability of Information Communication Technology (ICT), children can now access Internet from home via multiple devices. In developed countries, earlier concerns about a ‘digital divide’ among children due to inequalities in access to ICT have been replaced by concerns on ways they use ICT in schools and at homes (Kerawalla & Crook, 2002). However, little is known about how students use Internet to learn at home. It is generally viewed that some students engage too much time in online activities, such engaging in new media, playing games, or participating social networking, we do not know to what …

Security Risks And Protection In Online Learning: A Survey, Yong Chen, Wu He

Distance Learning Faculty & Staff Publications

This paper describes a survey of online learning which attempts to determine online learning providers' awareness of potential security risks and the protection measures that will diminish them. The authors use a combination of two methods: blog mining and a traditional literature search. The findings indicate that, while scholars have identified diverse security risks and have proposed solutions to mitigate the security threats in online learning, bloggers have not discussed security in online learning with great frequency. The differences shown in the survey results generated by the two different methods confirm that online learning providers and practitioners have not considered …
