Scholarship In Action: The Case For Engagement, Nancy Cantor
Scholarship In Action: The Case For Engagement, Nancy Cantor
Chancellor's Collection
Tonight I want to make the case for bold, imaginative, reciprocal, and sustained engagements between colleges and universities and their many constituent communities, local as well as global. If we intend to pursue the vision of the university as a public good, with broad benefits for our knowledge society---especially for the understanding and practice of democracy and the values of diversity, social justice and peace---we must initiate and support these new kinds of engagements. And we must extend the practice of them from their historical roots in the great public land-grant universities and community colleges of our nation to the …

This essay discusses the transition process for academic vice presidents from the perspective of an academic vice president. Given that many institutions do not adequately plan for the exit and entry of academic vice presidents, and the lack of literature on this topic, as well as the importance of this position at many institutions, this essay is offered as a beginning for further study.
The movement of academic administrators from one institution to another is done with perhaps more regularity today than in past years and decades. It has been argued that while many academic vice presidents spend most of …

The Limits Of Service-Learning In Higher Education, Dan W. Butin
The Limits Of Service-Learning In Higher Education, Dan W. Butin
Education Faculty Publications
This article takes a critical look at the attempted institutionalization of service-learning in higher education. It asks whether service-learning can become deeply embedded within the academy; and if so, what exactly is becoming embedded. Specifically, this article suggests that there are substantial pedagogical, political, and institutional limits to service-learning across the academy. These limits, moreover, are shown to be inherent to the service-learning movement as contemporarily theorized and enacted. The article concludes by reframing some of the grounding assumptions of service-learning to position it as a disciplinary field more suited for becoming genuinely embedded within higher education.

Authentic E-Learning In Higher Education: Design Principles For Authentic Learning Environments And Tasks, J. Herrington
Authentic E-Learning In Higher Education: Design Principles For Authentic Learning Environments And Tasks, J. Herrington
Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)
With many learners failing to engage with didactic and outmoded instructional methods, and unwilling to use technology that simply replicates the one-way transfer of information from teacher to student, authentic learning designs have the potential to improve student engagement and educational outcomes. This paper argues that online technologies afford the design and creation of truly innovative authentic learning environments. The theoretical foundations of this approach are strong, and they are also explored, together with discussion of the importance of tasks as the focus of authentic activities. Finally, the case is made for a more comprehensive approach to investigating the effectiveness …

For many business segments, true “out of the box” innovation occurs in entrepreneurial companies where the founders aren’t hindered with the research paradigms established by mainstream businesses. The founders of these companies, many times technologists and scientists, see the application of the technology long before potential customers develop an understanding of the capabilities that the new technology can bring to the marketplace. Many times these “new technology ideas” have been developed though modifying an existing dominant design (product or service) to meet an unforeseen market need or through the development of a new design that may become the new industry …

They can rate the professors on difficulty, helpfulness, and clarity and post general comments. Online since 1999, RateMyProfessors now contains over 4,200,000 ratings for professors from 5242 schools. Students do use this source, but should they? Is it just gossip or does it have useful information for …

This concluding chapter, written by a national leader in higher education, reflects on public scholarship from a perspective beyond Penn State and argues that public scholarship promises to strengthen “that special form of public decision making that we call democracy.”
