Awareness of OER is essential to understanding and implementing open and equitable pedagogical practices. However, what if a campus requires more education about the “what” and “why” of OER to then spark discussions about open pedagogy? And how does an institution build a campus culture of open education when stakeholders have different degrees of investment in its implementation? Open Educational Resources (OER) have become a popular alternative to traditional textbooks for university students throughout the U.S. due to their affordability and positive educational outcomes. To better determine the outcomes of OER usage, this study evaluates the implementation of OER at an individual course level and across courses at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). Student success was measured by the DFW rates, which refers to the number of students who received a grade letter of D, failed, or withdrew from the course, before and after the implementation of OER resources in various courses. The UMSL OER Open Dataset is a collection of data pertaining to Affordable and Open Educational Resources (OER) courses offered at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL). The dataset includes information such as course names, IDs, instructors, meeting patterns, enrollment numbers, and more. This dataset is not exhaustive, but it does include a helpful data dictionary to help orient researchers, educators, and students to better utilize the dataset to explore potential student cost savings and patterns in affordable and OER course offerings at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Higher education institutions have become increasingly interested in exploring the innovative learning opportunities afforded by open educational resources and practices (OER). These same institutions have begun to more seriously consider ways to eradicate racism.
