Student Engagement: What Is The Best Way To Motivate Students In The Secondary Classroom?, Michiah Arguello

Honors Projects

In the secondary education classroom, the question often arises: How do we engage our students? Often, we are faced with heads down on desks, glassy eyes, and students who don’t remember content taught to them the day before. How can we engage them? How can we motivate them to want to learn?

In this study, I will examine five procedures determined by educators to enhance student engagement. In each section, I will discuss the procedure, discuss what the procedure’s steps are and how to approach it, and share a way I have utilized this procedure and reflect on its effectiveness. …

The Impacts, Implementation, And Sustainability Of Service Learning In The Classroom, Amber Gerrits Aug 2018

The Impacts, Implementation, And Sustainability Of Service Learning In The Classroom, Amber Gerrits

Honors Projects

This honors senior project focuses on service-learning in the classroom. Specifically, it uncovers the benefits, harms, and common potential challenges that service learning educators face when implementing community engagement activities in their schools and classrooms. The three areas surrounding this pedagogy research were: (1) impacts of the practice, (2) logistical implementation in the classroom of such projects, and (3) a look into how to suitably sustain this type of involvement for students in a post K-12 education setting.

To ascertain the answers about the impacts of service-learning, literature was compiled into a review, which unpacked terminology and answered the big …

University Libraries Equity & Inclusion Committee White Paper, Janelle Yahne, Samantha Minnis, Annie Bélanger, Jacklyn Rander, Matthew Reidsma, Gayle Schaub, Jennifer Torreano

Library Reports and Communication

By Fall 2017, ULEIC, and the task force before it, had been successful in bringing training opportunities to the attention of Libraries faculty and staff. However, the committee was struggling with defining its scope in relation to the work of Faculty Development and Support Committee (FDSC) and Department Heads. Collaborating with the Dean, it was decided to move forward with a co-creation facilitation, which would engage all members of ULEIC, to define:

  • The vision/purpose for the committee
  • It's relationships and partnerships with other library and campus groups
  • The desired outcomes
  • A new charge
  • A workplan

This report summarizes the findings …

The purpose of the study was to test the effectiveness of an interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) education program on clinicians' and students' knowledge and attitudes toward IPCP and to determine the effectiveness of an IPCP weight loss program in two nurse-managed centers. The study team used the Midwest Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research Center (MIPERC) collaborative practice education program that consists of online learning modules followed by daily huddles and collaborative care planning. The obesity intervention program was implemented by faculty and staff practitioners and students in two clinics with very different patient populations (community residents and college students). Staff/faculty …

Information Literacy Outreach In A Fake News World, Debbie Morrow May 2018

Information Literacy Outreach In A Fake News World, Debbie Morrow

Presentations

In a “post-truth” society how do we sustain an informed citizenry, the underpinning of our democracy? What news is “fake” and which facts are “alternative”? Crucially, how do we educate students to evaluate the information they encounter in a variety of contexts and disciplines? How can librarians take the lead in teaching that "authority is constructed and contextual"? This session offers some ideas culled from outreach and contact opportunities around campus during the last year [2017].

How Women Leaders Can Promote Sustainability Initiatives, Naida Weinert

Senior Projects

This paper discusses what would be the best organizational management model that could help to attain and promote corporate social responsibility. Research has been assessed on the themes of gender differences (men vs women), leadership styles (including men leaders vs. women leaders), sustainability, corporate social responsibility (including the managerial position), the importance of stakeholders (internal and external), and a combination of these subjects. Stereotypical attitudes are discussed on leadership differences between men and women within this paper. Another area of the research emphasized the importance of stakeholders linked with organizations as well as how internal and external stakeholders have significance …

Redesigning The Frederick Meijer Honors College Curriculum, Kathryn Malia Brooks, Bradley Williams, Andrew Dzierwa, Kelsey Rutkowski, Bethany Chambers

Undergraduate Research

Welcome reader,

We appreciate your interest in our design challenge of reimaging the Frederik Meijer Honors College curriculum. Over the course of several months, we have worked diligently through the design thinking process to arrive at a solution that meets the needs of FMHC stakeholders. We have conducted interviews with these stakeholders in order to gain empathy and conducted secondary research which allowed us to broaden the scope of our insights and search for potential solutions. Many hours were spent ideating our own solutions and prototyping them through a collaborator debrief process. This portfolio contains the details of our process …

Dear Reader,

Thank you for your interest in our team, The ASAP, and our work with the Grand Valley State University Frederik Meijer Honors College. At the time of undertaking the task of reimagining the current Honors College curriculum, we explored the current sentiments of stakeholders, unfulfilled needs, and how other colleges have provided solutions to these needs. Our hope is that you, whoever you may be, become inspired and that ideas from our final prototype become a reality in the Honors College curriculum.

The team working on this project consisted of 6 members, all introduced on the page prior. …

Tatyana Markus: Hero Of Ukraine, Ariana L. Martineau Apr 2018

Tatyana Markus: Hero Of Ukraine, Ariana L. Martineau

Honors Projects

A dramatized telling of the story of Tatyana Markus, a young Jewish resistance fighter from Kiev, Ukraine. Under a false identity, she personally killed dozens of Nazis during WWII. Along the way she lost many people she cared about until she was captured herself. Tatyana has gone on virtually unknown throughout the world, so this play is an effort to spread word about this brave, amazing girl who was only in her early 20s. I think the themes are very relatable to today's society with the struggle of whether to stand up to injustice, or stand by. Especially since she …

Increasing Teacher Effectiveness Through Faculty Learning Communities, Rick Vandermolen, Catherine L. Meyer-Looze, Cynthia Sonderegger Smith, Suzanne Richards Jan 2018

Increasing Teacher Effectiveness Through Faculty Learning Communities, Rick Vandermolen, Catherine L. Meyer-Looze, Cynthia Sonderegger Smith, Suzanne Richards

Peer Reviewed Articles

Faculty sometimes experience isolation, which can negatively influence their teaching and capacity for improvement. The authors share the benefits of participation in a faculty learning community (FLC) to mitigate teaching isolation. This study used a protocol to structure conversations around instructional problems of practice. Participants found that these structured conversations benefited their teaching and learning as well as collegiality, collaborative inquiry, and reflective practice. This study affirmed the critical importance of FLCs as a structure for increasing teaching capacity and provided insights about the roles each participating faculty member must learn for an FLC to be effective.
