Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

Students will learn utilization of maps and their elements. They will also learn about physical and human characteristics of communities. The goal of this unit is to help students understand that maps tell the story of a community and that people modify their physical environment to meet their needs. Through station exploration, map reading practice, creating digital maps, and exploring the local neighborhood, students with a variety of learning modalities will internalize the purpose of maps. Students transfer their knowledge and skills at the end of the unit by designing a community and creating a map to represent that community.

Humanities education, particularly in the areas of early childhood education and applied social studies must engage with professional practice education. There is urgency for the need for practitioners and educationalists to communicate, and for practitioners to be aware of developments in educational theory. The idea of ‘threshold concepts’ is currently widely discussed by educationalists. Using Solo Drama To Make The Teaching Of Social Studies Engaging For Students, Michael Kemeh

Social studies is a major subject taught in schools in the United States. Research shows lack of interest in the subject by most school children. The author reflects on how he prepares teachers in a graduate drama course to use solo drama as another instructional option to address the problem. The paper also examines integrated solo drama projects by four students in their respective classrooms as case studies. The findings are synthesized to demonstrate the efficacy of this drama strategy for classroom teachers and teacher educators to adopt in making social studies meaningful and engaging for learners.

Education reform over the last two decades has changed perceptions of core curricula. Although social studies has traditionally been part of the core, emphasis on standards-based teaching and learning, along with elaborate accountability schemes, is causing unbalanced treatment of subjects. While the research literature indicates teachers are spending less time on social studies, perceptions about the subject are more complicated. Trade books are a logical curricular link between these two curricula. The initiatives, however, do not prescribe specific curricular material so teachers rely on their own discretion when selecting available trade books.
