These students were challenged to initiate research over a topic they thought was interesting and show how it related to our campus, Stephen F. Austin State University. Members of a major world religion are required to register their affiliation and ordered to wear badges of identification. They are tracked. Their places of worship are put out of commission. They are shamed in public for being who they are, and no one offers them help in even the more dire situations. The year is 2015, and Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has recently suggested all American Muslims should “absolutely” be required to register their identities in a database, for monitoring purposes because, in his words, “Our country has no management.”

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, on behalf of the East Texas Research Center (ETRC), Ralph W. Steen Library, Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA), was awarded a Humanities Texas mini-grant to provide programming for the opening reception of the Portraits of Freedom art exhibition, June 11, 2015. A $1,000 grant from Humanities Texas paid the honoraria for two guest speakers, Dr. Douglas Chambers from the University of Southern Mississippi and Dr. Daina Berry from the University of Texas at Austin. Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 2906. Chiefly letters written by Locke family of Indiana to Sally Barnett of Ohio County, Kentucky. Although they address her as "sister" and "aunt," no relation is apparent. They discuss religious (Methodist) and family matters. Also includes a letter from Samuel Landstreet to H. Stevens and Charlotte Belt in which Landstreet expresses his feelings about emancipation. Finally, an appeasement agreement made between a prominent group of Baptist leaders in 1892, apparently in Louisville.

Stuart Eric Leibiger, Ph.D. was born in 1965 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, the youngest of four children. He spent all of his life along the northeastern seaboard of the United States. He was raised in Connecticut and graduated from the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before settling in the Delaware Valley. He joined the La Salle University history department in 1997 after working at Princeton University for a time. Portion of a letter, 25 December 1865, written from Morganfield, Kentucky, by a Presbyterian clergyman to his father. After a two-year lapse in communication, he updates his father on his teaching duties at a male academy and his preaching at two churches. He also mourns social ills such as crime and intemperance, and contrasts the irreligion of the North with the growth of evangelical churches in the South.
