Ouachita Baptist University students L.B. Hudson and Evan McKinnon were recently awarded first place in the university’s seventh annual OBU Business Plan Competition. A total of $9,000 in prizes was awarded to the top three teams and their faculty advisors.

Rachel Jones has been named director of career services at Ouachita Baptist University effective Dec. 1. She succeeds Rachel Roberts who had served in that role since 2014.

Jones previously served as marketing director for Sodexo on the Ouachita campus and as a hall director and assistant director of recreational life at Ouachita. She also has held staff positions at Midwestern State University and University of the Ozarks.

As director of career services, Jones will assist students in identifying personal strengths and areas of academic and vocational interest. She will counsel individuals about effective employment search strategies including resume and …

Ouachita Baptist University’s Department of Theatre Arts will host its annual One Act Play Festival on Dec. 10-11 at 7:30 p.m. in Verser Theatre. The performances are free and open to the public.

The One-Act Play Festival is a required part of a senior level course for theatre majors. These seniors choose a play of their choosing, cast the actors and direct the plays. Auditions for these plays are open to anyone on the campus, so students from all majors have the opportunity to participate in the festival. This year’s festival includes nine different performances.

Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will present its 19th annual A Service of Lessons and Carols on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. The service is free and open to the public.

The service is an interpretation of a tradition made popular by the Chapel at King’s College in Cambridge, England, where a service of scripture readings and communal music helps to focus the participants on the advent of Christ.

Eight Ouachita Baptist University students were named finalists at the 40th annual Southern Region National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) conference held recently at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Among the finalists, Esther Atkinson, a sophomore musical theatre student, earned two first place awards. Susan Monroe, OBU staff accompanist, also received the James Ronald Brothers Award for Outstanding Collaborative Pianist in the southern region of NATS.

"The Great War: Arkansas in World War 1," a traveling exhibit chronicling Arkansas' role in World War 1 at home and on the battlefields, will be displayed in Riley-Hickingbotham Library on the campus of Ouachita Baptist University from Nov. 23 through Dec. 18. Ouachita Baptist University's Division of Music will host Annie McMurray and Erin Cheshire in their senior recitals and Hunter Mackenzie Brown and Kayla Walker in their sophomore recitals on Friday, Nov. 20. Ouachita Baptist University's Jazz Band will present its fall concert on Monday, Nov. 23, in Jones Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.

The band has been active on campus for more than 40 years and this year includes 20 students under the direction of Dr. Craig Hamilton, Ouachita's Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music and director of bands.
