The Framework for 21st Century Learning identifies four learning and innovation skills to prepare students for a changing world. The 4Cs identified are critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity (Framework for 21st Century Learning, 2015). With the adoption of this new teaching framework, it is important that music educators evaluate their own teaching methods to meet the needs of their students in a changing society. The University of Maine Symphonic Band has invited Dr. Nicholas Williams to be a guest conductor and clinician for the University of Maine Symphonic Band and our guest band from Hampden Academy; both bands will perform on the December 8th concert at the CCA. Our guest conductor will also give a performance clinic for the Old Town High School Band while in our region.

Each year the University of Maine School of Performing Arts presents a completely student-organized fundraiser pops concert in the Collins Center for the Arts. The project serves three purposes - to raise funds that will support the outreach programs of the SPA, to raise awareness of the SPA offerings throughout the community and state, and to provide students with the opportunity to organize, produce, direct, and perform in a professional-quality show in a renowned concert hall. Urinetown is a satirical comedy musical that pokes fun at politics, greed, musical theater, and even its own name. It takes place in a world where water is so scarce that you have to pay to pee, and the rates keep going up. It opened on Broadway in 2001 and was nominated for 10 Tony awards and won three. UMaine's production of Urinetown will feature over 60 students, faculty, staff, and guest artists, and will take place in Hauck auditorium for seven performances.

Notes From Mrs. Hadgu's Class: Conceptualizing Music Education Curriculum For A Changing World, Logan B. Santiago

How can we conceptualize curriculum and school knowledge to better address important questions of social change, contingency of knowledge, life in mediated worlds, and inequalities? To answer this question I wrote fictional stories from students about their favorite moments from their 8th grade music class. Each account deals with a specific activity or instance in which the teacher included social change and/or student centered knowledge in the curriculum. The explanation at the end of the accounts details the reasons for creating each activity and the relation of the stories to texts utilized in class.

Violinist Richard Hsu is an active soloist and chamber musician. Richard has performed with Orchestra of St. Luke's, Clarion Society, Early Music New York, New York State Baroque Ensemble, American Classical Orchestra, and Concert Royal. He was formerly Associate Concertmaster with the Moscow Ballet at Spoleto Festival USA. He holds a performer diploma and bachelor's degree in Violin Performance from the Indiana University School of Music. He furthered his studies at Manhattan School of Music. There will be several concerts of the music of visiting guest composers, performers and of Umaine Faculty. We also will be hosting, as guest artists for one concert within the festival: a clarinet and percussion duo from Boston, Transient Canvas.

Over the last century, Irish traditional music, or “trad,” has become a global phenomenon that has flourished in communities from the United States of America to Japan. A musician need not be Irish in heritage to play and do justice to Irish traditional music or to feel a strong emotional connection to it; yet ethnic ties, real and imagined, constitute a powerful reason to play. This unit is very flexible and allows for much student choice. Included are three student projects, each of which allow students to choose what they wish to explore. For the first project, students work alone, and simply research and informally present a French or French language artist or group. For the second project, pairs of students research a musical genre or a period of musical history, and present it to the class. The final project asks students to create a clip for an existing song and to critique the song itself. In between the projects, there are several options to …
