Tier Ii Behavior Interventions In Head Start, Kim Westcott, Bethany Ochal, Melinda Tanzman

This study focused on early identification and differentiated intervention for preschool children with behavior problems. The disproportionate prevalence of behavior problems among low-income children suggests the importance of such early intervention to promote later academic and social success in this population. Tier II behavior supports, in the context of the Teaching Pyramid, were provided in an upstate New York Head Start. Interventions were implemented in small-group settings. Using qualitative individualized reports following each session combined with Social Skills Improvement System scores, changes in problem behaviors and social skills were assessed. This technical report summarizes new and existing data to address the question, “Does Head Start work for Indiana children, families, and communities?” Data sources consulted in this study include the state Head Start Program Information Report, local Indiana Head Start and Early Head Start Programs, existing national studies of Head Start and Early Head Start, and local and national data available on children’s development in early care and education programs for low-income families. The implementation efforts of 65 early childhood professionals involved in the Getting Ready project, an integrated, multi-systemic intervention that promotes school readiness through parent engagement for children from birth to age five, were investigated. Digital videotaped records of professionals engaged in home visits with families across both treatment and comparison conditions were coded objectively using a partial–interval recording system to identify and record early childhood professionals’ implementation of intervention strategies and their effectiveness in promoting parent engagement and interest in their child. Adherence, quality of intervention delivery, differentiation between groups, and participant responsiveness were assessed as multiple dimensions of fidelity. …
