Unlv Financial Aid Forecasting, Austin-Ryan Abendanio, Cheyenne D'Cruz, Julie Jeon, Michelle Trinchera
Math 365 Class Projects
With an increasing population of students enrolling into UNLV each year, it is important to be able to predict the financial aid funding for future years. We were able to predict how many students would apply for aid and whether or not they would receive any, or enough need-based financial aid, from the years 2019-2023.

Interest-Based Bargaining: Changing Employer-Employee Relations At Youngstown State University, Patrick W. Carlton
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications
This study is based upon interviews conducted with over two dozen individuals centrally involved with the collective bargaining movement at Youngstown State University of Ohio. (YSU) The experiences and memories of several participants extend back to the 1960’s, at which time they were newly appointed faculty members. Within the group are several retired persons who spoke from the comfortable position of relative political invulnerability. Others were at the time of their interviews actively engaged in university teaching and administration. Initial interviews concerning the newly-established Interest-based bargaining process took place within eight months of the negotiatory events, well before the “ravages …

Reconciling The Rhetoric And Reality Of Student Loan Debt, Elizabeth Akers
Reconciling The Rhetoric And Reality Of Student Loan Debt, Elizabeth Akers
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
Student loan debt has increased over the past three decades. This lecture will identify the factors that led to that increase in student loan debt what economic and social factors drove that increase. The talk will also consider the economic effects of increased or decreased earnings generated by individuals with student loan debt. This analysis will present data to assess the validity of several widely-held beliefs about the impact of student loan debt in the United States (e.g., increased student loan debt is depressing the housing market) and apply data-backed evidence to determine ways in which current and proposed policies …

Understanding Nevada's Higher Education Governance For Two-Year Colleges: Challenges And Solutions, Magdalena Martinez
Lincy Institute Reports and Briefs
State governance of colleges and universities is an indicator of the state’s relationship with key stakeholders, such as business leaders, elected officials, policy makers, and local residents. Accordingly, a state’s college governance structure shapes two-year public colleges’ institutional priorities and how these vital institutions respond to local workforce needs. Around the country, an important function of two-year colleges is to provide training and skills for regional workforces that align to local business and industry needs. This brief examines the origins of two-year colleges and compares Nevada’s college outcomes with those of similar states through.
Innovation, Inequality, And The Commercialization Of Academic Research, Walter Valdivia
Innovation, Inequality, And The Commercialization Of Academic Research, Walter Valdivia
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
Patent policy is rarely debated in relation to its distributive consequences. In particular, the Bayh-Dole Act has been discussed in terms of its effects on the pace of innovation or the organization of science. However, this lecture re-assesses this policy from the perspective of a fair distribution of resources, both those committed to and those created by research-based innovation. Specifically, examining the management of university’s intellectual property, Valdivia will identify the institutional arrangements that reinforce a very asymmetric distribution of political and economic resources among universities and then characterize subtle but important links between these inequalities and the social distribution …

The Educational Role Of Research Libraries In Higher Education: A White Paper For The Directors Of The Greater Western Library Alliance, Patricia A. Iannuzzi
Library Faculty Publications
This white paper provides background about the convergence of disparate undergraduate education movements in higher education that affect GWLA individual institutions, particularly those initiatives related to the reinvention of undergraduate education in research universities. It provides suggestions for how individual GWLA member libraries can take advantage of an unprecedented interested in education reform to assume leadership roles on our campuses, and in doing so, provide greater security for libraries during fiscal uncertainty as they position themselves, their collections, and their services as an integral part of the instructional agenda as well as the research agenda. Finally, it suggests some ways …
