Recognizing Bias In Social Media News: Resources For Teaching Media Literacy In Special Education, Melinda S. Burchard Ph.D., Lori Konopasek, Betsy Layman, Sarah Myers, Linda Poston

Faculty Educator Scholarship

With the empowerment of social media news literacy, students in special education can interact with their world with deeper competencies of critical thinking skills and civic engagement. In exploring personal and news biases, online users will have the tools to effectively grapple with the content found in their newsfeeds.

The included lesson uses current social media news stories. Students will be able to identify vocabulary communicating possible bias, including absolute words or phrases, words or phrases communicating degree, and words or phrases that are positively or negatively charged.

State of the College/University Addresses

At the beginning of each academic year, Messiah University holds Community Day, a time for the University's Community of Educators (CoE) to gather, reflect, and prepare for the upcoming year. As part of Community Day, President Phipps presents her State of University Address, introducing the theme for that academic year.

Finding Belonging Through Children’S Books Rating Scale, Melinda S. Burchard Ph.D.

Faculty Educator Scholarship

This scale is developed to guide selections of children’s books to support children finding belonging through various identities or challenges.

Directions: Read through the book. Identify characters and topics, including topics requiring care. Then rate. List Topics Requiring Care: List events or emotions that require care in use (IE death, suicide, abuse, trauma):

Story Shaping Ideology: Majoritarian Stories Of English Learners, Tina Keller

Faculty Educator Scholarship

Using interviews, artifacts, email correspondences, and lesson plans collected from six white, female, preservice teachers during their student teaching, this chapter focuses on the stories that shaped their ideologies of the emergent bilingual children in their classrooms. The findings indicate the preservice teachers, while having diverse lived experiences, held some common majoritarian stories concerning English learners. In addition to those majoritarian stories already established in the field, there were three additional stories uncovered in this study that significantly influenced the ideologies of emergent bilingual students. Murray Library at Messiah University created a unique marketing tool called Murray in a Hurry. This newsletter is typically distributed every two weeks and is hung in all bathroom stalls. It provides information on library events, new materials, literary quotes, grammar, and humor. This combined document includes all 13 issues during the 2020-2021 academic year.

Murray Library's 2020-2021 Annual Report displayed as an infographic. It includes highlights for the 2020-21 year and testimonials from educators, undergraduate, and graduate students. Statistics are lower than most years due to the COVID-19 pandemic which impacted on-campus activities.
