Students often have difficulties making connections between rational number concepts and their relationships to other mathematical applications and real world situations (Johanning, 2008). Researchers have advocated that students should experience using rational numbers with multiple and varied models integrated into context (Empson & Levi, 2011). In this article, we discuss a lesson that drew upon probabilistic reasoning as a means to help students connect rational number reasoning to real world situations. Probabilistic situations act as an extension to rational numbers in that they often involve fractional models and encourage students to reason through topics, such as part to whole relationships …

Cultural Humility: A Framework For Local And Global Engagement, Eloise Hockett, Linda Samek, Scot Headley

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Many institutions of higher education have implemented local and global engagement opportunities as a way to expose both students and faculty to different cultures and further their knowledge of those cultures. One of the primary goals of these cultural experiences is for students and faculty to become more culturally competent. However, it is possible that our current way of thinking and promoting cultural competency within education specifically may not go deep enough and could be considered limiting in the ways we partner, collaborate, and interact with people groups different than ourselves. Cultural humility, a construct currently accepted in some professional …

The C.S. Lewis Study Centre at the Kilns is located near Oxford, England in the previous home of C.S. Lewis, the highly influential 20th century Christian intellectual and apologist. Two professors, who coupled a brief stay at the Kilns with an inquiry into the life of Lewis and his writings, present insights into their work as teacher educators. Three main areas are explored. The first area is the nature of our work, including a discussion of the distinct roles associated with Christian teacher educators and the importance of professional community. Next is a discussion on the quality of our work, …

At-Risk Students And Communication Skill Deficiencies: A Preliminary Study, Kevin Jones Jan 2014

At-Risk Students And Communication Skill Deficiencies: A Preliminary Study, Kevin Jones

Faculty Publications - Department of Communication and Cinematic Arts

Early research has explored the relationship between at-risk students and communication apprehension. At-risk students have been found to have high levels of apprehension in a variety of communication settings. However, little attention has been given to exploring at-risk students perceptions of their communication skills and other areas of communication competency beyond general communication apprehension or fear of speaking. This study explores the relationship between at-risk students; self reported levels of communication competence, communication apprehension, and additional areas of communication skills such as self-monitoring and verbal aggressiveness. The results of this study show that at-risk students tend to report having high …

Cultivating A Community Of Truth Through Critical Pedagogy When Faced With Resistance: Teaching My Gender Students How To “Ride The Bus”, Kevin Jones, Carol Jo Brazo

Faculty Publications - College of Education

This essay will identify how the authors confronted a community of resistance in a Gender and Communication classroom and turned it into a community of truth and tolerance. Working from a theoretical framework of Critical Pedagogy and the work of Parker Palmer, the authors will explore how the classroom is often seen as a culture of fear and disrespect. This culture of fear needs to be confronted by identifying a community of truth as found in two different models of truth. After exploring how to achieve a community of truth when faced with resistance, the authors will explain in great …

At the latest PME-NA (35), a working group met on the topic of negative numbers. Groups presented on their research within one or more categories related to negative integers: role of contexts, models, historical development, algebra, student understanding, and teacher knowledge (Lamb et al., 2013). We began a productive discussion on issues related to each of these categories and would like to broaden the discussion with the inclusion of members from the international community. Further we aim to develop research collaborations around mutual areas of interest.

Teacher Candidates’ Perceptions Of Debriefing Circles To Facilitate Self-Reflection During A Cultural Immersion Experience, Rebecca A. Addleman, Carol Jo Brazo, Kristin Dixon, Tatiana Cevallos, Shary Wortman

Faculty Publications - College of Education

This study followed 9 teacher candidates through a 3-week cultural immersion experience in which they volunteered in educational settings where they were not members of the majority culture. This learning experience was designed to help candidates better understand their culturally, ethnically, and linguistically diverse future students. A qualitative design with an ethnographic approach was used to explore the use of debriefing circles, based on Parker Palmer’s clearness committee structure. Debriefing circles were examined as a tool to facilitate self-reflection as a scaffold toward culturally responsive teaching. Candidate perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of the debriefing-circle discussion framework are analyzed.

An Investigation Of Subtraction Algorithms From The 18th And 19th Centuries, Nicole Enzinger

Faculty Publications - College of Education

How do you subtract? What is your algorithm of choice? The most common subtraction algorithm in the United States today is the decomposition algorithm. While other algorithms exist and are possibly utilized, no other algorithm dominates the contemporary curriculum, classrooms, and pencils of children in the U.S. more so than the decomposition algorithm. Subtraction is one of the fundamental building blocks of arithmetic. Looking to the past and exploring the history of subtraction algorithms can help us glean knowledge of the intended and possibly implemented curricula in past eras. In this paper, special attention will be given to 18th and …

This study followed 24 teacher candidates in a short-term cultural immersion field experience designed to help them reflect on their assumptions and perspectives in order to better understand the culturally, ethnically, and linguistically diverse students they will teach. Qualitative methods were informed by a phenomenological research approach to examine candidates’ transformative learning experiences in a cultural immersion context. The findings are discussed within a three-stage framework of transformative learning: triggering experiences, frame of reference examination, and transformative change.

Book Review: Writing Instruction And Assessment For English Language Learners K-8, S. Lenski, F. Verbruggen, Tatiana Cevallos

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "The National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition reported that today 11% of K-12 students in the USA are English language learners (ELLs). In 20 years, 25% of students in public schools will be ELLs (in Goldenberg, 2008). The growing number of ELLs creates a need for teachers who can implement culturally responsive teaching (Lucas & Villegas, 2007) and develop strong language and literacy skills among their students (Goldenberg, 2008). While veteran teachers adjust to the changing demographic and its demands, new teachers must be equipped with the right mindset and strategies to promote both language and literacy development simultaneously. …
