Truth U, Justice U, Jesus U, Joseph Clair

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "College and university professors in the liberal arts (humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences) are almost entirely left-leaning, liberal, or progressive, and this is especially true among faculty in the humanities and social sciences. Insofar as political party affiliation is representative, the statistics are stunning- roughly 12: I Democrat to Republican in the humanities and social sciences nationally, and this ratio is even more pronounced in certain selective schools (Brown University takes the cake with 60:1).1 Students who attend liberal arts colleges or universities (that is, non-trade, nonvocational schools that require core curricula and keep an array of majors …

Teaching For A Multifaith World; From Bubble To Bridge: Educating Christians For A Multifaith World, Debra S. Espinor Apr 2018

Teaching For A Multifaith World; From Bubble To Bridge: Educating Christians For A Multifaith World, Debra S. Espinor

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Similar but different is the metaphor to describe both multifaith books reviewed here—similar in that both are exploring the many facets of how to live in our multifaith world today, and different because the books are written for different audiences and ages. Teaching for a Multifaith World, edited by Eleazar S Fernandez, is written for an audience of seminarians. The language is pastoral and the book is a compilation from writers from many well-respected seminaries across the United States. The title of the book implies that this might be a textbook in a course within a religious studies program. From …

The Unexpectedness Of Hope: Good News For A Generation, David Johnstone Jan 2018

The Unexpectedness Of Hope: Good News For A Generation, David Johnstone

Publications from Student Life & Spiritual Life

The gospel of Jesus Christ is wrapped in the notion of God's "will be[ing] done on earth as it is in heaven" (Matt. 6:10 NIV). The good in the good news (or gospel) looks a little different for every age, culture, and context. Unlike the Eastern no-tion of karma, or what goes around comes around, the Christian gospel centers on God's grace being offered to those who accept Jesus's kindness and authority. God extends grace so that men and women do not receive what they deserve; therefore, what goes around does not come around. Many find this to be good …

Keeping A Clean Heart (Chapter 7 Of For Today: A Prayer When Life Gets Messy), Patrick Allen Jan 2018

Keeping A Clean Heart (Chapter 7 Of For Today: A Prayer When Life Gets Messy), Patrick Allen

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "When I heard that some of the kids at school received an allowance, money their parents actually gave to them for no particular reason other than to do a few chores around the house, I could hardly believe it. It seemed too good to be true. I never received an allowance, and the idea of having some spending money of any kind was usually out of the question. Once in a while, my mother would give my brothers and me a quarter each to go to the municipal swimming pool if we hoed five rows of corn in the …

The Lost Purpose Of Learning, Joseph Clair Sep 2017

The Lost Purpose Of Learning, Joseph Clair

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

In the autumn of AD 386, a thirty-two-year-old academic superstar named Aurelius Augustinus made a radical move: He resigned his position as imperial professor of rhetoric in Milan and retired early. The position, as prestigious as an endowed chair of government at Harvard today, represented the pinnacle of intellectual achievement in its time. Yet Augustine was disillusioned, tired of teaching “résumé virtues” to “excellent sheep.” He complained that liberal education in the later Roman Empire had become purposeless and disoriented, preoccupied with the ephemeral aims of career, wealth, and fame. Intellectual and spiritual vitality had vanished from lecture rooms and …

Engaging Lbgtq Issues: It’S Still Complicated, Gary F. Sehorn Dr. Apr 2017

Engaging Lbgtq Issues: It’S Still Complicated, Gary F. Sehorn Dr.

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Public school administrators deal with a range of culture war conflicts on a regular basis, and LBGTQ issues are particularly challenging. When I joined my Christian university’s faculty after a long career working as an Evangelical administrator in public schools, I looked forward to shifting from experiencing these conflicts as a public school administrator to equipping others to handle them. Instead, the challenges have become even more complicated.

Faithful Educators: Evangelism In Public Schools, Gary Sehorn Mar 2017

Faithful Educators: Evangelism In Public Schools, Gary Sehorn

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Evangelicals serving in public schools share a religious mandate with fellow Evangelicals to spread the gospel. That mandate must coexist with role-based professional obligations to students, staff, and the school community. In this paper, evangelizing in public schools by teachers and administrators is explored with emphasis given to evangelistic instincts rooted in religious socialization. Christian educators generally seek to offer a Christian witness within the boundaries of the law and there is evidence that most Evangelical educators avoid overt proselytizing, however counterexamples are plentiful. An analytical frame is proposed that describes common approaches to evangelism in public schools and points …

The Lost Purpose Of Learning (Chapter 1 Of On Education, Formation, Citizenship And The Lost Purpose Of Learning), Joseph Clair

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "College is a rich part of the Western cultural imagination and a canonized plot line in the American middle-class mythos. Although it is costly and time-intensive, there are good reasons to be proud of this tradition and to go away for four years to become adults. After all, college leaves an indelible stamp on the soul: the formative lessons of newfound independence, hard work, and leisure in preparation for the business of life. Few institutions have more nostalgic and patriotic bonds of affection that last as long-and procure as many donations- as college and university alumni associations. Americans talk …

Appendix A – A Brief Introduction To The Religious Faiths And Spiritual Beliefs Included In The Primary Religious Education Program, Ken Badley, Dana Antayá-Moore, Amy Kostelyk

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Religions and spiritual beliefs answer the profound questions we ask ourselves: What is the meaning and purpose of my life? Who am I? What is right and wrong behaviour? Of course, in a resource like My Place in the World and in this Teacher’s Resource Guide, we can barely scratch the surface of the beliefs, traditions, and practices of the faiths and spiritual beliefs discussed. Nevertheless, in this part of the Teacher’s Resource Guide, we provide information about each of the faiths included in the student resource. We present the information in chronological order of the appearance of each major …

What Does Faith Got To Do With It? Influences On Preservice Teachers’ Racial Identity Development, Yune Tran Jan 2016

What Does Faith Got To Do With It? Influences On Preservice Teachers’ Racial Identity Development, Yune Tran

Faculty Publications - College of Education

The U.S. student population has grown more racially and culturally diverse demanding teachers who possess certain skills, competencies, and cross-cultural proficiencies to serve students equitably. With a continual homogeneous White teaching force, studies on preservice teachers’ racial identity have prioritized in the field to promote anti-racist education within a social justice model. However, few studies have documented identities of preservice teachers who attend predominantly private evangelical Christian institutions. This mixed-method study investigated White preservice teachers’ racial identity development focusing on the interconnectedness of religion with beliefs of race, culture, and diversity.

Book Review: Taking Every Thought Captive: Forty Years Of The Christian Scholar’S Review, Amy Lynn Dee Jan 2013

Book Review: Taking Every Thought Captive: Forty Years Of The Christian Scholar’S Review, Amy Lynn Dee

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "King’s introduction provides the answer to the most compelling and perhaps perplexing question that comes to mind when one picks up a book of articles published from 1970 through 2010. Why? After all, in the day of search engines and electronic data banks, it does not require much of a hunt to unearth older and out-of-print articles. Furthermore, in the academy we often overlook anything with a publication date beyond ten years ago simply because it becomes “historical” and newer scholars have offered alternate perspectives while building upon the contributions of our more distant colleagues, as they should. However, …

Book Review Of Gearon, Liam: On Holy Ground - The Theory And Practice Of Religious Education, Ken Badley

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "With On Holy Ground, Routledge adds a thoughtful and welcome volume to its growing list of titles related to religious education and Christian education .Gearon begins by taking his readers on a sobering tour of the rejection of the sacred, which rejection he views as the root of the modern project .After making stops at Darwin, Kant, and Marx, Gearon notes that religious education in the modern period requires 'a close reading of the texts of modernity' (p. 4). While Gearon does not burden his readers with too many details of such a reading, he does provide evidence …

Book Review Of Shortt, John's Bible-Shaped Teaching, Ken Badley Jan 2012

Book Review Of Shortt, John's Bible-Shaped Teaching, Ken Badley

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "What might it mean for Christian teachers to have their work shaped by the Bible? What might it mean for people who name Christ to have their whole lives shaped by the Bible, regardless of their profession? John Shortt wants to answer these questions in his accessible book, Bible Shaped Teaching .Shortt addresses his readers directly with the expository prose his readers will likely expect, but he seamlessly incorporates stories and even builds his answers around stories .This book is not about how to teach, but teachers who read it and take it seriously will likely view their teaching …

Book Review Of Ronald B. Hoch And David P. Smith’S Old School, New Clothes: The Cultural Blindness Of Christian Education, Ken Badley

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "In Old Schoo; New Clothes, Hoch and Smith accuse Christian schools of being blind to the forces and forms of modernity, in fact not only blind, but founded on the very same principles as public schools. This cultural blindness extends to the institutions that train Christian school teachers, to administrators, teachers and parents. Hoch and Smith want to explore the roots of this widespread cultural blindness and its effects, and they want to point to ways forward."

Grace (Chapter One In Faithful Teaching: Values And Themes For Teaching, Learning, And Leading Purposeful And Principled Education), Amy Lynn Dee

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "There was a large coatroom in the back of the class, perfect for storing the boots and coats required in the winter days of my third year in school. It also served as a great place to hide if math was not of particular interest. Mrs. Callahan, realizing she was missing a difficult and resistant math student, kept teaching as she made her way to the door of the coatroom to take the hideaway, Arthur, by surprise. She pushed the door open, and as she entered to sweep aside the hanging coats in order to reveal the missing student, …

Response To José Ramón Alcántara-Mejía (From Christian Higher Education In The Global Context: Implications For Curriculum, Pedagogy, And Administration), Douglas G. Campbell Jan 2008

Response To José Ramón Alcántara-Mejía (From Christian Higher Education In The Global Context: Implications For Curriculum, Pedagogy, And Administration), Douglas G. Campbell

Faculty Publications-- Department of Art and Design

Excerpt: "Dr. Alcantara offers us some significant insights that deserve both careful consideration and further discussion. Of primary importance, in my view, is his observation "that the humanities have lost their relevance." He attributes this loss of relevance, in part, to several shifts in educational methodology which have taken place since the middle of the twentieth century. So, instead of being seen as culturally central the humanities have been relegated to a minor role within culture generally and academia in particular. He goes on to observe that Christian higher education can choose this path, which relegates the humanities to a …

"George Fox University" In Founded By Friends: A Collection Of Essays On The Quaker Colleges In America, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "George Fox University is owned by Northwest Yearly Meeting, which appoints all its trustees. Four-sevenths of these must be Friends, and this relationship keeps the institution close to its parent religious body. This being the case, a high degree of interaction exists between Northwest Yearly Meeting and the university, and this relationship is felt to be mutually beneficial. While the number of Friends students in the traditional undergraduate program has remained between 74 and 145 over the past three decades or more (making up between 4 and 15 percent of the traditional undergraduate population), aspects of Quaker identity are …

Closing The Loop: Debriefing And The Short-Term College Missions Team, David M. Johnstone Oct 2006

Closing The Loop: Debriefing And The Short-Term College Missions Team, David M. Johnstone

Publications from Student Life & Spiritual Life

Colleges routinely send teams across cultural and economic lines to serve other communities. The returning from any cross-cultural experience is laced with dissonance. This article hopes to provide paradigms to assist making these trips a more significant educational experience. Using Mannoia 's description of how learning takes place, we perceive that all aspects of the educational experience can become tools for creating learning. Short-term cross-cultural trips have the potential for being one of the most formative pedagogical experiences of a student's college career. The tools presented here should assist them to transform the event into a significant l(fe experience.

Can A True Faith-Based Education Be Delivered Online?, Kaye Shelton, George Saltsman, Jekabs Bikis Jan 2006

Can A True Faith-Based Education Be Delivered Online?, Kaye Shelton, George Saltsman, Jekabs Bikis

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Can a faith-based education be as effective when delivered online as when it is delivered face-to-face? An in-depth look at the early adopters of the online technology reveals that it can be if the Christian university commits itself to developing an online learning community and to interweaving faith principles into crucial areas of its online program. The three key areas of faith integration upon which hinges the success of such programs are the integration of faith into course material, faith integration in the relationships among students, and faith integration in the faculty student relationships. Consistent attention to these three areas …
